Northern Bay and Arenac Rotary Presents 2016 Saginaw Bay Nature Festival

February 23, 2016
By: Stephen Kent

2016 Mike Stoner
The club welcomed former club President Mike Stoner, now with the Norther Bay and Arenac Rotary Club, who spoke about the upcoming 2016 Saginaw Bay Nature Festival to be held in and around Pinconning the end of April.

Mike said that the Bay City Club, besides being the sponsoring parent club to the Pinconning club, played a pivotal role by giving a $500 community grant to the festival. The Pinconning club built on that grant by showing others that the festival was significant enough that even Bay City was supporting it. The goal was $4,000 and the club is already at the $5,500 mark.

For a number of years, the Pinconning club has participated in Bay City's annual International Night fund raiser. With the change this year to the Zombie Run, the Pinconning club decided that they needed to come up with their own signature event. From that decision came the Nature festival.

Although sometimes overlooked, "Birding" is a very popular international activity. The Midwest Birding Symposium, held last fall at the Doubletree, attracted 4 to 500 people from all over the US. A number of them noted that the Saginaw Bay is one of the most important bird migration areas in the country.

The upcoming Festival will have four components:
  • Nature Art Competition sponsored by Bay City Rotary
  • Conservation Challenge sponsored by Chemical Bank.
  • Saginaw Bay Waterfowl migrations
  • Lecture Series

The Festival has all the hallmarks of a budding and long term success. The major sponsor is Northwoods Wholesale Outlet. Other sponsors include the Bay City Rotary Club, Chemical Bank, Bittersweet Quilt Shop, Pinconning Rotarians, and the Pinconning-Linwood Chamber of Commerce.

    CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

    A NOTE ABOUT E-MAIL:
You should be receiving a weekly notice that the Breezes (which you're reading now) is available. Even if you do NOT receive the e-mail, you can always use your browser and go to MyBayCity.com to read the breezes.

In recent months we've noticed that e-mail is not infallible. Spam filters and other "protections" prevent e-mail from reaching everyone it's addressed to. If you are not receiving your e-mails, you should contact your e-mail provider. If that doesn't work, consider using a different provider (gmail, yahoomail, hotmail, etc.)

You may also want to go to the club web site RotaryBayCity.org and check the on-line directory. This is our master record for all members. Be sure that your address and other information is correct. If not, contact Steve Kent.

Rotary Rocks "Birds Of A Feather" planning continues. Keep April 28 on your calendar! Andrea Hales will be selling program ads at $30, $50, and $100.

The club's Community Grant cycle is open through March 15. Check the club web site for full information and applications.

Andrea Hales still needs a second family to host our exchange student for the Spring school session. She also says that the exchange for next year is being scheduled now and she needs a first host family on file so they can get busy on obtaining a passport.

A small number of dues invoices have yet to be paid. If you are one of that number, please attend to this matter soon. Payment will be greatly appreciated as the club needs to make its payment to Rotary International.
