Rotary Hears About Midland Center for the Arts

Bruce Winslow, director of the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Arts, part of the Midland Center for the Arts, outlined the high-quality arts offerings of the museum at the Bay City Rotary Club on April 12. "Art offers messages of hope," he said, commenting "we must shine the light."
Among the 20 to 30 exhibitions of science and art presented each year have been such outstanding exhibits as King Tut and Leonardo DaVinci, an exhibit that featured workable wooden models of some of DaVinci's most notable inventions.
Other popular exhibits have included dinosaurs and Amy Adelman's web-like thread exhibit that filled an entire room, said Mr. Winslow, who is a graduate of New York City's Pratt Institute. "These exhibits bring yellow buses filled with inquisitive youngsters to our doorstep constantly," he said.
In the Hall of Ideas currently is "Speed: Science of Motion," depicting aerodynamics and motion, and explicating the aspects of human endurance. Upcoming on May 1 is the "Art of Dr. Seuss" and on the future docket is "Reflective Illusions," an amazing silver and glass presentation.
The Center for the Arts offers studio school experiences by providing a full curriculum in a well-equipped studio. Education and outreach are accomplished by "wonderful parties," he enthused, including the "largest wine tasting event in the state."
The Center's Holiday Art Fair earns enough revenue to pay 30 percent of exhibit expenses, he said. A summer Art Fair features beautiful works of juried artists from across the country, food vendors, street musicians, artists' demonstrations and a children's activity corner.
More than 50,000 visitors explore the center's featured exhibitions each year. The key to the Hall of Ideas is its hands-on approach geared to a celebration of the visual arts and sciences through individual participation, appreciation, education, and expression. Inspiring special events round out the center's programming.
