Red Cross Seeks Community Volunteers to Prepare for Inevitable Disasters

Seventy-two high school students are scheduled to participate in the Bay City Rotary Club's highly successful Vocational Days program Tuesday.
Next week an additional 85 students have signed up to do job shadowing and come to Rotary with their mentors for a day.
Vocational Days Chairperson Griff Acker has lined up Dave Smith of the Midland Rotary to explain how students can get involved in the Rotary international exchange program. Two international exchange students are slated to be on hand with Mr.Smith.

Actually, Vocational Days started last week when Leo Najar of Bay Musical Arts hosted five students. "We started a week early because we were in rehearsal for Beehive and the students could see what we do," said Mr. Najar. "As the temperatures are going up, things are looking up," exclaimed President Ralph Knop.
Chris Iworski, director of disaster and military relief for the local chapter of the American Red Cross, and Americorps volunteers Ellen Rodman and Kelley Kent urged Rotarians to join the Red Cross.
By becoming part of the local Red Cross reserve corps through the "Ready When the Time Comes" program you can help the agency plan for the inevitable local disasters, said Mr. Iworski.

A recent Red Cross survey showed that 62 percent of respondents were not confident about their preparedness for a disaster in their workplace; 67 percent said they had not received specific information about preparedness from their employer in the past 12 months; and 55 percent said they received no disaster or emergency information from their employer.
Benefits to corporations include increased visibility in the community, free CPR/First Aid training and improved employee morale, he said. Among current corporate members are Bay Regional Medical Center, Michigan Ethanol, SC Johnson and General Motors PowerTrain.
Local groups that have received disaster response traininginclude Bay Regional Medical Center, AAA, Red Lobster, Messiah Lutheran Church, Tuscola Behavioral Health, and the local chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.
March is Red Cross Month and there will be an open house Monday, Mar. 13 from 4-6 p.m. at the East Shoreline Chapter, 228 Washington Ave. CPR and AED demonstrations will be presented and there will be an opportunity to meet the Red Cross staff.
