Rotary Hears about CMU Museum of Cultural and Natural History

March 21, 2017
By: Stephen Kent

Former Club President Ron Bloomfield was the Director and Chief Curator of the Bay County Historical Society Museum for over 22 years before leaving at the end of last year for a jog with CMU's took a job with CMU's Museum of Cultural and Natural History. He returned to Bay City on Tuesday, along with Caity Burnell to tell Rotary about the CMU Museum.

Ron used slides to illustrate what the Museum does and what it has to offer. Unlike the Bay County museum, the institute at CMU exhibits many natural items including a reproduction of the ancient human fossil dubbed "Lucy", cultural exhibits and stuffed animals ("How do you get a full sized brown bear into the building?" asked Ron).

The Museum has a number of people on staff but also has a group of students and volunteers. The school offers degrees in Museum Studies and course work includes everything from working with exhibits to preparing specimens, articulating skeletons, and working with the public.

Caity talked about outreach programs and offerings to educators. The museum recently received a grant that allows them to bus school classes to the museum for programs. Caity mentioned some of the dozens of programs offered. She also talked about resource kits that the museum provides to teachers who want to do programs in their classrooms.

The CMU Museum is located on the northeast corner of the campus near the Special Olympics offices. They are open to the public Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm, and weekends 1-5 pm. Admission is free. Caity did say that parking can be a challenge and if you want to park on campus you must get a visitor's permit.
