Home Gun Safety Topic of Rotary Program
March 13, 2018
By: Stephen Kent
Rotarians Bob and Cindy Chadwick, long time gun enthusiast and competitive shooters spoke to the club about the
BE SMART Gun Safety program.
The Chadwicks made a point of saying that the program had no political agenda and they would not get into those issues. The fact is that there are guns in many homes. There are also children in those homes. Kids are curious and, in their minds, invincible. Few things are as attractive as an easily accessible gun. Some simple rules and considerations are essential to keep those kids safe.
A number of examples and stories were related. Most of the stories just tugged at your heartstrings. These were senses tragedies where kids were injured or killed. Each story illustrated how easily it happened, and how easily it could have been prevented.
Among the preventative remedies that came up repeatedly was the benefit of using a gun lock. The Chadwicks passed around a simple lock that can cost less than $10. They also said that if anyone had an immediate need, they would simply give that person a lock; it's that important.
Bob and Cindy are members of the Be Smart program and will go to any venue to present the Be Smart talk and program.
The full story of the program is available on the web site:

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS
Andrea Hales recently introduced the club's
RED BADGE program. New members are identified by a red "new member" sticker. Those members are asked to complete five tasks in their first year. When those have been done, the club will formally remove the red sticker at a Rotary meeting.
Details of the program are on the club web site. Click

There are two openings on the club's
Board of Directors. Terms are two years. One opening had just 3 months to run. The other is for a year and 3 months. President Chadwick asked that any member interested in serving on the board should contact him. Serving on the board is a good way for a new member to check off one of the "Red Badge" items as well as learning a great deal about the club.
The
Spring Community Grant Cycle has closed. Look for recommendations from the committee in the next few weeks.
Lee Newton gave a brief report on the recent
Rotary Rocks concert. Attendance was as good or better than the average concert. He confirmed that the club will realize somewhere between $3,000 and $3,200, which is earmarked for the Polio campaign. Lee talked about several things that might be changed in the future. He also asked for any feedback that members might have.
Thanks to Lee, Cindy, and Andrea for all their hard work!
Pete Shannon, membership chair, asked for people to be thinking of potential new members and of programs that could be featured during our upcoming membership drive. We will have a "brainstorming" meeting soon and ask everyone for their thoughts.
