Rotary Receives Update on Community Advancement Network

February 19, 2019
By: Stephen Kent

Beth Sorenson Prince
Beth Sorenson Prince, Director of the Community Advancement Network, spoke to Rotary about the program, its history, and services.

Founded in 2013 the Community Advancement Network works with regional nonprofits to strengthen their organizations and enhance their effectiveness and efficiency. A program of United Way of Midland, the network is a partnership of the regional Community Foundations and United Way's, with support from The Dow Chemical Company.

A primary service is to provide capacity building services to nonprofits. Working with universities, consultants and others, the Network will connect consultants with the nonprofits. Much of the cost is paid via "Cost Share Grants", which a nonprofit might not be able to afford otherwise.

Capacity Building is a long term approach that helps take nonprofits to the next level of "operational, programmatic, financial, or organization maturity". Results come from assessments, board development, business planning, collaboration, fundraising, networking, and management tools and techniques.

In a slide titled "By the Numbers", Prince said the programs have done 109 projects with a commitment of almost $605,000. Consultants have logged almost 6,500 hours and done projects in the entire region. Several testimonials reinforced the success of the programs.

Looking to the future of the network, Prince outlined a number of next level steps including training in fund development, human resources, board management, and board leadership. The network provides a centralized clearinghouse via their website and services like space for meeting, transportation programs, and donations of material goods.

The network has embraced a tool called iCAT (Impact Capacity Assessment) which quantifies an organization's health. This well-regarded program captures facts and information from numerous areas. It estimates an organization's capacity, offers recommendations, and documents activity.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

A note to all members. Dues invoices for the January to June term have been e-mailed. Please take care of this as soon as possible. If you did NOT receive our invoice, please contact the secretary.

In the day's "Rotary Foundation Minute", Anne Trahan asked "Do you remember how cold it was last week?". During the recent deep freeze, she found her pipes frozen and she had no water. That experience made her think of the Rotary Foundation's clean water programs and how difficult life is in countries which don't have clean water. A precious resource to others is taken for granted by those of us blessed to live in the developed world. Clean water is just one of the many programs supported by the Rotary Foundation, programs which depend on the generous contributions of people like Rotarians.
