Rotary Hears About Drug Abuse

May 7, 2019
By: Stephen Kent

Lori Ziolkowski
Lori Ziolkowski of "Families Against Narcotics" (FAN) spoke to Rotary about the realities of drug addiction. Lori, who is a faculty member from the Business and Technology Division of Delta College, told how easy it is for someone to get addicted and what they'll do to service that addiction.

She told the personal story of her daughter, who was an outstanding student and athlete in high school but who fell in with the wrong boyfriend, and his friends, and eventually found herself in the clutches of heroin addiction.

This is the new face of addiction, the person you'd NEVER expect to have a drug habit. She talked about the dangers of legitimate drugs that have become overprescribed and far too easy to come by. "It only takes five days" was the message. In that short time today's powerful pain killers can change your brain in a way that is unstoppable.

Lori gave a number of stories and talked about things you can do to avoid the drugs. She said that you must ask what is being prescribed. And you should specifically say you don't want narcotics. In fact, there is now a form you can sign at the hospital to make this desire known.

The catch phrase used by FAN is "HOPE not Handcuffs". The groups efforts, with the help of law enforcement and health professionals, do make a difference. The group meets monthly at delta College. If there's a problem, Lori encouraged people to contact FAN at (989) 439-5507

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

Soon to be retired Asst. District Governor Larry Arndt has signed up for the "Great Cycle Challenge". He plans to ride his new bike 200 miles to raise funds for kids with cancer. In a nod to Rotary, Larry is adding another 100 miles to raise funds for Rotary's Polio Plus campaign. If you'd like to sign up to support Larry's efforts, information is available at the club meetings or through Larry himself.

The Tall Ship Celebration is coming to down in mid-July. As always, Rotarians will fill a number of volunteer jobs. See Nancy Greve for details and to volunteer.

Cindy Chadwick passed out raffle tickets for the upcoming Golf Outing. Members are asked to either sell those tickets, or to purchase them. The prize will again be an I-pad computer with AirPods.

A challenge has been underwritten by Lindsay Richardson, who will give a gift certificate to a local restaurant to the person selling the most Golf Outing raffle tickets! Don't miss this one.

Tara Welch has been setting up the new Club Runner system with club records. She'll be sending an automated e-mail soon. If you don't get one, be sure to let her know so she can check the records.

In other news, Sargent At Arms Eric Jylha fined Chris Girard for using an expletive when called on for something he had forgotten. And he fined Cindy Chadwick for a story she posted on Facebook that sounded like it was about Bob, when it was actually about their dog. Frank's phone went off unexpectedly, Deb Lutz broke her knee when on vacation, Lee Newton's book is a roaring success, Give Local Bay was happening as the meeting was going on, and the Bay Concert Band concert is almost on us!

Hey Rotarians! TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT! It's time for the "Mitten State Music Revival". Be at the Historic Masonic Theater tonight, 5:30 on. Tickets are $10. Check out throughthese4eyes.com for an article about the Revival.

In the day's "Rotary Foundation Minute" Chris Girard asked a series of trivia questions. If the club got the right answer, Chris donated $5 to Polio. If the table answering the question got it wrong the club paid $1. A good way to raise some bucks for a very worthwhile cause.

The club will meet off-site on these dates:
    June 4 - The Depot
    June 18 - Marriott Uptown
    July 30 - Marriott Uptown

COUNTING DOWN

At the board's direction, these Breezes, the club web site,
and the member database will be dropped as of July 1, 2019.

Replacing these systems, used for the last fifteen years, will be the Club Runner program. If there are features of the current system that you like or rely on, be sure to ask board members or incoming administration if there will be a replacement for that feature.
