LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM: Greg Dalhberg of Meier and Associates presented a program with the intriguing title of "The Little Known Secrets of How To Get Maximum Money for College"or "How to Legally Arrange Your Financial Situation to Pay For College With As Little Out Of Pocket As Possible!".

This is a matter of some concern and not a small amount of stress for people who have children in college or shortly to be there. Deciding how to pay is always stressful but more so for baby boomers who may have had families later in life and now face the prospect of high education costs as well as approaching retirement.

Dalhberg had several important pieces of advice. First, start early. The sophomore year of high school is not too soon to start looking at schlarships and funding alternatives. A student in their senior year might be eligible for some assistance only to learn that they needed community service or other things that it's too late to get.

The most important tip is to be sure to make a FAFSA application. This is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It cost nothing to apply. The result is a single number, the Estimated Expected Family Contribution, which all institutions use to figure out what kind of aid the student can receive. The EFC is the amount the family must come up with, the balance is provided by the college in the form of scholarships, loans, work study and other programs. The FAFSA can be done on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

NOTE: The FAFSA must be renewed annually and your college will not process your aid package without a current FAFSA report.

One misconception is that the family's income is too high to qualify for any aid. In fact, qualified students are in demand and colleges can come up with a number of ways to assist students. By the same token, a student with limited resources may find that schools will come with a package that allows him or her to attend.

The important thing is to plan ahead, fill out the FAFSA, and look at all of your options.
