Collective Marketing of Great Lakes Bay Region Explained by Annie Rummel

June 28, 2011

Annie Rummel, President
GLB Regional Tourism Bureau
The word is going out to the world, in a way never before attempted, about the glories of the Great Lakes Bay Region (Bay, Saginaw and Midland counties).

Soon presses will be running again to increase the already incredible number of 850,000 glossy GLB tourism guides which include special Internet access codes, explained Annie Rummel, president of the GLB Regional Tourism Bureau.

Ms. Rummel spoke to the Rotary Club of Bay City last Tuesday, describing "great opportunities for economic growth in tourism."

Chambers of commerce in the three communities are supported by the area's new "Big Three" -- Dow Chemical, Dow Corning and Hemlock Semiconductor, she said.

Those key firms and others are working together "to bring the best and brightest here to work," she said.

The area is already one of the most visited in the state, she asserted, and offers 5,000 hotel rooms and 1,200 campsites.

The largest wildlife refuge in Michigan, professional sports teams like the Loons and Spirit, the nation's "best tennis town, Midland," and the world's largest Christmas wonderland, Bronner's in Frankenmuth, are among outstanding attractions.

Saginaw will host the Midwest Regional Soccer Tournament in 2012 and MBS Airport soon will open a new terminal in Freeland, she noted.

Increased revenue from an increased tax on hotel-motel rooms, she said, is "driving more dollars into marketing and is part of the Pure Michigan national advertising campaign."

Although the Bay City office of the GLB tourism bureau was moved from the Pere Marquette Depot as a cost-savings, and is now located in the Delta College Planetarium, plans are to build a permanent office near the Saginaw River, according to Ms. Rummel.

"We live in the most fantastic place on the planet!" she concluded.
