Delta College Possible Dream Presented to Rotary

October 22, 2013
By: Stephen Kent

Dorian Phelps and Mary Harding
Dorian Phelps updated Rotary on the Possible Dream program at Delta College. Started in 1992, the program has seen 1,427 student participants. The mission is to keep local, at-risk students interested in their studies. The goal is to keep those students involved, insure that they graduate and that they attend college.

The program offers students educational and cultural experiences. They assist with college planning and help the students recognize that people outside their family are both interested in their success and believe that they can achieve their dreams.

Possible Dream caters to students who have faced economic hardships. Often they are from single-parent homes. Some are raised by relatives. Despite the hardships the students are bright and eager to learn. They will have received some form of state or federal aid.

The program is aimed at 6th graders but that is not a hard rule. Students develop at different speeds. If a 7th grader is recommended that student is often accepted. The program accepts about 100 students a year. Currently there are about 366 students enrolled.

Funding for the Possible Dream program comes from a major fundraiser, the well known "Chocolate Affair". The first program was the "Holiday Preview Benefit, which ran from 1991 to 2000. The Chocolate Affair started in 2001 with a larger venue and had been a great hit ever since.

This year's event will be held November 21 at the Horizons Conference Center in Saginaw. The event opens at 6:00 pm for a special early admission reserved for Patron Ticket holders. General admission opens at 7:00 and the event runs until 9:30.

The event features delicious food and beverages, live music, dancing, and "scrumptious desserts". Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Possible Dream students.

Mary made a point of mentioning what doesn't happen at the affair: No assigned seating, No speeches, No auctions, No extra costs.
