The David E. Bennett and Ralph L. Powell Memorial European Pheasant Shoot drew a capacity 54 hunters who took about 500 birds for charity last week.

The cause was a good one: funds for student nurse training, and about $10,000 was raised, according to Keith Markstrom, director of the Bay Medical Foundation.

"Everyone really enjoyed themselves, especially since the weather was so good this year and conditions were perfect for walking and shooting," said Mr. Markstrom.

Hunters came from as far away as Alpena, Cincinnati, Grosse Pointe, Mt. Pleasant, Canton and many other state locations to participate.

Site of the hunt was Trapper Jim's Hunt Club on M-46 near Kingston.

The name of the event, now in its seventh year, was changed this year to honor the late David E. Bennett, former auto dealer, fundraiser and sportsman extraordinaire. Mr. Bennett died suddenly on Feb. 8, 2007. The name of the late Ralph L. Powell, former General Motors executive, also an avid sportsman, has been attached to the hunt since its beginning. Mr. Bennett had succeeded Mr.Powell as chairman of the hunt committee.

Sponsors of the charity hunt included the Stein Haus, John E. Green Co., Executive Mortgage of Michigan L.L.C., Independent Bank-Bay Area; Bay City Boat lines, Riversbend Rehabilitation, Nietzke & Faupel, P.S., CPAs; Wolgast Corp.; Moulthrop-Clift Inc., Braun Kendrick Finkbeiner, P.L.C.; Short Freight Lines; F. P. Horak, CDI, Prestige Benefits, and MacMillan Associates.

Committee members included Todd and Kyle Bennett, Bob Short, Scott Janke, Evan VanTol and Guy Moulthrop.

Ten birds per shooter were released from towers in the field during the European part of the hunt. A walk-up followed the tower release portion and concluded the hunt.

"We really appreciate everyone who participated and helped to carry on what has become a great little event," Mr. Markstrom commented. "This is a charitable hunt that has developed into a pretty unique outing."

For information about next year's hunt please contact Mr. Markstrom by calling 989-667-6264 or by e-mail at kdmarkstroom@bhsnet.org.

Cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, wine tasting and dinner followed the hunt activities on site at Kingston.
