Five from Bay City traveled to Riverside, California last week-end (April 20-22, 2007) to play and watch the National Doubles Paddleball Championships at THE TOURNAMENT HOUSE. Bay City's Earl Pratt drove out to watch . . . yes, drove. Mike Wisniewski, Chad Krager, Sandy DeGreif, and Randy Wackerle flew out to the Los Angles area.

Just under 100 players from across the United States competed in nine divisions. Bay City players brought back two National Titles.

In the Masters division (45+) Mike "Wiz" Wisniewski(8-time National Singles Champ) teamed with Vince "Vinny" Carlone from California to defeat the Michigan team of Jim Richter and Jim Sterken from Ann Arbor, 19-21,21-5, 21-16 in a hotly-contested finals on Sunday.

Randy Wackerle defended his 2006 Golden Masters (55+) title with a new partner in 2007. This year, Wackerle teamed up with local Bay City talent Sandy DeGreif (who just turned 55 years this year to qualify for Golden Masters.) Wackerle won last year with former #1 in the world racquetballer Charlie Brumfield from San Diego, California.

Below: (Left) National Doubles Open Champions - Kelly Gelhaus and Todd Entrikin from Riverside, California have ruled the courts for an amazing run. Gelhaus has won seven out of the last eight national singles and doubles championships. They defeated Mike Czabala from Ventura, California and professional racquetballer Chris "The Giant" Crowther also California 21-11, 21-14 in a very exciting final. This year Wackerle-DeGreif played against the same legendary Brumfield in the finals. For 2007, Brumfield teamed with another former professional racquetballer, Eric Campbell. Campbell is the current reigning NPA National Singles Champion.

The Bay City team defeated the legends 21-11, 21-14 in the Golden Masters title match.

Each year the NPA gives out two awards at the final tourney of the year. This year Bay City's Mark Piechowiak received the Sportsmanship Trophy. Piechowiak passed away unexpectedly. Awarded for good sportsmanship under extreme conditions.

Wackerle was totally psyched after winning the Nationals Title for the second straight year. "I promised to myself that if I won I would thank God in print in some way," Wackerle told MyBayCity.com after he returned to Michigan.

Wackerle also said that he did tell partner, Sandy DeGreif right after the match that "If I had to give credits for the win that DeGreif would come in third." DeGreif asked, "What do you mean.?"

Wackerle then told DeGreif, "That I credit God first, my chiropractor second, and you (Degreif) Sandy comes in at third."
