Joyce Olson-Burpee had her sights set on raising $4,000 for the Susan G. Komen Bowl for the Cure Cancer Fundraiser.
Two years ago, Olson-Burpee started a bowling tournament in Bay City in memory of her aunt, Sandra Gallagher Gugin, who passed away with cancer back in 2000.
Olson-Burpee is passionate about finding a cure for breast cancer because about seven years ago, she lost a very close aunt to the disease. "My aunt Sandra Gallagher Gugin died of breast cancer in October of 2000 at age 60," Olson-Burpee said emotionally. "I started this tournament in her memory."
Olson-Burpee said that in the Spring of 2007, she saw a flyer about a bowling-breast cancer fundraiser and the idea just "clicked" in her head.
"It was such a perfect fit for me," Olson-Burpee said. "I love bowling and I'm passionate about fighting breast cancer," she said. "I guess the rest is (as they say) history," she added.
This year, Olson-Burpee had the full support of the Bay City Bowling Association's Deb Besaw and had expanded her bowling fundraiser to two tournaments - Team Event at Alert and Singles at Washington Lanes. All competition was ?-Pin No-Tap."
In addition, the local Bowling Association worked the lanes in Bay City (during and before the tournament) almost every night of the week, selling 50/50 tickets in support of the cancer cause.
The bowling raised $2,009 and the 50/50 raised $1,148.
Olson-Burpee is sending a check for $3,157 to the "Susan G Komen for the Cure" Cancer foundation.
Team Event Winners (ALERT LANES): FIRST($165): Deb Besaw, Kathy Howe Mike Kasperski and Roy Rasmus with a total of 3224. (SECOND) ($110) Elizabeth Jones, Dale S., Fran Pudvan, and Tom W. with a score of 3150.
Three Hundred (300) Game Winners ($5 Each) at ALERT LANES Were: Tom W., Dale S., Dan VanSumeran, Lynsey Wotta, Paul Zaucha, Derick Miller, Tim Wisniewski, Angie Harwood, Kerry Sharp, Mike Kasperski and Roy Rasmus.
Singles Tournament Winners at WASHINGTON LANES Were: John Watson, Sr. (938, $81.60 Prize), Tony Rooker (923, $61.20 Prize), Alisha Saxton (898, $40.80 Prize) and Jesse Mancilla (822, $20.40 Prize).
"Great work everyone," was the one thing Olson-Burpee had to say about the fundraising effort of the bowling lanes (Alert and Washington) and the local USBC Association.
"I look forward to doing this again next year and making it bigger and better! Thanks to everybody for all of your help," Olson-Burpee said.
Olson-Burpee still has towels for sale as well as pink bracelets and pink or white water bottles with the breast cancer logo on them. Bowl for the Cure is a nationwide breast cancer awareness and fund-raising initiative sponsored by the United States Bowling Congress.
