Last Weeks program - March 18
Club Hosts 150+ Students
The majority of this day's students visited Delta College where they were hosted by various departments, teachers and professors. Following the meal and brief program all of the students were introduced individually.
Rather than a traditional program with a speaker, President Rob Clark, and other Rotarians gave the usual club news and announcements, taking the opportunity to explain some of what Rotary stands for and what the Bay City club does as it relates to those announcements, which follow:
CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS
The International Night committee will meet next week. This committee plans and executes the Club's largest annual fund raiser, which will raise in excess of $30,000 toward a five year major project. Almost ten years ago the club funded the Youth Outreach Librarian for the bay county Library for five years. The current project built pocket parks in the downtown area and is currently putting $150,000 into landscaping for the restored Pere Marquette Depot.
The District 6310 Conference is scheduled for April 24-26 at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort in Mt. Pleasant. The Bay City Rotary Club is one of 32 clubs in the district, which stretches from Owosso to Alpena, Mt. Pleasant to Harbor Beach. Visit the District 6310 web site for more information.
The Love Bag Project, sponsored by the Rotary Club and the Lions Club, is now accepting duffel bags, back packs, suitcases, etc. for distribution to foster children. The goal of this project is to collect 500 duffel bags, back packs, and suitcases to be distributed to foster children by Lutheran Child and Family Services. Donations may be dropped off now through April 30 at a number of locations.
Cindy Luczak reported on the Thesaurus Project where the club gives a new Thesaurus to every 4th grader in the county school system. This compliments the Dictionary project which distributes these books to every 3rd grader.
Chuck Cusick talked about Rotary's International effort to wipe Polio from the face of the earth. He Said that although the disease may not be familiar to today's students in the US, when he was a kid it was an epidemic and he remembers swimming pools being closed and the fear of the crippling effects. Today, thanks in large part to Rotary's effort starting in 1985, Polio is now found in only four countries. With the help of a $200 million matching grant from the Gates Foundation, the end of the dreaded disease is in our grasp. Cusick also reminded club members of the 3-year, $3,000 challenge match from Andreas and Tracy Teich.
Mike Stoner reminded the club that the TWO Group Study Exchange teams, one from West Africa and one from Australia, are due in April. He explained how this exchange program allows young business people to travel, all expenses paid, to other countries for a month. A team from those countries then comes to the US for a month.
