This year long celebration began on January 8, 2007 with a Special Tribute from the State of Michigan that was presented at the Board of Education meeting by Senator James A. Barcia. The tribute was signed by Governor Granholm, State Representative Jeff Mayes, and Senator Barcia.
A tour of Garber High School and a reception was held last July 7, 2007, to kick-off the celebration. All five of the district's schools and the Community Education department had displays set up telling their history. A salute to the district was made by Tom Remus, Mayor of the City of Essexville, and Terry Spegel, Hampton Township Supervisor. Legislators attending included Jeff Mayes, Michigan House of Representatives, and Dale Kildee, U.S. House of Representatives.
Other events included a Welcome Back Breakfast for staff last August, and a back-to-school gift for all students and staff in September. A special homecoming and parade was held in October with themes from the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s was held. A special tribute was made to our service men and women entitled, "Welcoming Home Our Heroes". The district dedicated part of its homecoming parade and pre-game festivities to local heroes and issued an open invitation to all Garber grads (actually any Bay County resident) who served in any branch of the U.S. military, or as firefighters and police officers to be honored.
On November 20th, a community Thanksgiving service was held. In December, students in all five schools celebrated "birthday" parties with the theme: "Celebrate Our Past, Present, Future".
MyBayCity.com congratulates all members that have served this district with dedication and determination for the past 50 years! Congratulations!
