The restaurant that you've known for over 50 years has finally opened again at 201 Center Ave in Bay City Michigan.
MyBayCity got the scoop on the new downtown Rudy J's from owner Jana VanSpoorthe -- from the history of the food to the history of the diner.
VanSpoorthe said, "My husband inspired me to start the first restaurant." It was originally called the Broadway Cafe, but after the media gave us such bad press from the last business we owned . . . we decided to change it".
So it was changed to Rudy J's. "It was my husband's nickname for me," she said.
Rudy J's on Broadway served family style food, and over 65 different kinds of omelets.
The business was successful, but the rent increased and they were forced to move.
According VanSpoorthe, the decision to move into the old Red Lion was perfect. "It was the best diner look in Bay City, and just the right size. VanSpoorthe said, "It was just, everything we ever wanted"
Unfortunately Jana's husband passed away in November while they where moving into the new location.
"I love my husband, and I miss him. I wish he was here." VanSpoorthe said.
With lines out the door, and hot dogs selling like crazy. Everyone wants to try out Rudy's Red Lion.
"I love my customers, they are what make your restaurant," said VanSpoorthe with a smile.
Come in and try something. Sit down and have a burger or even Jana's favorite, the Russian Omelet.
