The mission of MERF is to help musicians in need, by raising money that can be used to aid a musician in a financial emergency. Monies will be distributed to those in need based on decisions made by the officers and Distribution Board.
MERF formed when the sudden loss of fellow musician and brother Dave 'Smokey' Miller. Steve Rice and Bruce LaFrance quickly organized an event to pay Smokey's final expenses. It was during the planning of this benefit that Steve and Bruce realized that if an organization had existed to aide area musicians in an emergency situation had existed, their brother could have gotten the medication he needed and might still be alive today.
It is this belief that prompted the co-founders to start working on an organization for Tri-City musicians. During this development stage, other musicians from around the state, showed an interest in what was taking place and the Michigan Musician's Relief Fund was created.
According to Steve Rice, President of MERF, the next show will be in Detroit on March 20, 2011.
Rice said, "This was a great turn-out today, plus all the bands who participated, donating their time and talent to help raising money for musicians in need."
