"I am the Great Cornholio!" ~ Beavis

Ahhh, Summer, with your fragrant bouquets of coconut oil and lilting wafts of blooming jasmine that delicately tickle my nose. I feel the heat of your sun on my face, as I breathe in your balmy, reminiscent aromas.

The splendor of your days that seem to stretch on forever, while I dip my toes in the sparkling cool waters of a pool. Soothing my hot skin, if just for a while.

How I long for nights of lavender sunsets that shroud the fiery horizon, the smell of a grilling steak, cold lemonade, the whir of katydids singing their songs, the glory of fireworks.

A welcome recess from winter's bleak darkness.

So many things say "SUMMER!", without even speaking the word.

Perhaps the term that has come to symbolize summer in all it's humid and blue skies glory, is 'Cornhole'.

Hhmmm, cornhole.

It's not a pretty or melodious word by any means.

It's not very poetic.

I can't think of anything that rhymes with it, it's a rather harsh word and although I don't know why, I almost feel a little naughty saying it.

It's unclear if there is even corn involved and Wikipedia isn't certain of it's origin.

But one thing IS sure.

Everybody knows what it is. Anyone can play it and nobody can really figure out why we all like it so much.

Cornhole, the kindler, gentler, saner version of "Lawn Jarts" (beer consumption and flying steel-tipped darts can really be a potential disaster) have taken over a good portion of the Midwest since the '90's.

Picnics are not complete anymore without a game or two of Cornhole in play. The familiar "splat-plunk" of the bag hitting the game boards, are as familiar a summer sound as the neighborhood ice cream trucks tinkling bells.

Occasional shouts of "YES!" or "that's how it's done right there, Biff", are the standard background noise at family barbeques.

It is a game that's easy to learn and fun to play. You can be horrible at it and still enjoy it.

Or you can become quite skilled at your "shuckers" and "gushers" and enter tournaments to show off your cornhole athletics, if you're the competitive sort.

'Cornhole' seems to serve to remind us the dog days of summer are upon us. The word itself conjures hot weather memories of time spent with family or friends.

There are just so many things to like about a good game of cornhole.

But, I pondered and searched for the real reason why cornhole has become such a popular Summer activity and it boiled down to just these two things:

  • It is a game that can be played while still holding a cold beer in the other hand.

  • You just can't hear the word 'cornhole' without remembering the "Great Cornholio" and Beavis' t-shirt over his head, which is one of the funniest things ever created and still makes us bust up laughing.

    Cold beer and laughter.

    Summer.

    Cornhole.

    Bring it on. I'm ready.
