Carolyn Wierda
Rotarian Chuck Cusick Presented the club with an update on the international effort to eradicate polio from the world. Chuck and his wife Nancy have made several trips abroad to work on immunization campaigns. Nancy is going on yet another immunization trip Feb 12 to 27, this time to India.

As all Rotarians know, ending polio has been a focus of Rotary International (RI) since 1985. Currently RI has a goal of $35 million a year through 2018. Partners like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation leverage those funds by adding double what is contributed

Of the three types of polio, Type 1 remains in the wild and is the target of the final push. Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only remaining countries where polio remains a problem. The political and religious climate in those countries make the international efforts a significant challenge, but work continues.

80% of the world is now polio free. In Nigeria alone, Rotary donated over $207 million. Some 200,000 health workers immunized 230 million children in Africa. In 2014 nigeria recorded its last polio case and in 2015 the country was removed from the World Health Organization's list of polio endemic countries.

Friday, October 23, is World Polio Day. Events include a live stream of the programs, which will be carried around the world. The Rotary Club of Bay City is sponsoring a viewing party at the Bay City Times and MLive offices on Water Street in downtown Bay City from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Refreshments will be served and the plan is to have a "Purple Pinkie" fund raiser. (Across the world immunization workers color the pinkie of children with purple dye to indicate the child has been immunized.)

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

Rotary welcomed Mike Brush and Alexander Platt, the next candidate for the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra, to the meeting. Both men spoke briefly about the upcoming concert called "A River's Tale", to be performed Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 8pm. They invited the club to attend. For more information visit saginawbayorchestra.com.

Rob Clark spoke and invited members to the LIVE STREAM of the World Polio Day program at the Bay City Times / MLive offices on Water Street: 6pm to 8pm, Friday October 23.

Bob Chadwick reported on the grants approved by the Community Grants committee.
Bay Area Women's Center - Happy Bear Program which helps children identify good and bad touching. $750
Literacy Council of Bay County - Parent Involvement Project $1,000
Bay City Western High School - Chinese Exchange program $1,000
Bay City Players - Stages of Discovery $1,000
Rotary Club of Pinconning - Student Nature Art Competition $500

Andrea Hales reported on the success of the Running Dead Zombie Race. There were over 425 runners and 90+ volunteers. More kids showed up than hoped and the event actually ran out of the 50 kids t-shirts which had been bought for decorating. Preliminary estimates indicate an excellent financial result!

It should be noted that next year's Fall fund raiser, traditionally International Night, is on the table for discussion. Both events have their supporters.

Remember that Vocation Day is coming up November 10. See Matt Felan or Trevor Keyes if you would like to host some students.

The Club will MEET OFF-SITE at the Depot on October 27.
