Suzanne Greenberg
Suzanne Greenberg of the CAN Council spoke to Rotary about her organization's programs. The organization, which partners with the Nathan Weidner Foundation, addresses Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) issues in the region.

Greenberg talked about several of CAN's programs including CASA or Court Appointed Special Advocates. Trained CASA volunteers are assigned to follow individual children who are in the Bay or Saginaw County coutr systems dues to abuse or neglect. Volunteers are trained then deputized by the court, giving them the authority to go almost anywhere and collect any information on the child's behalf. CASA is a national program.

Among the other programs are Children's Advocacy Centers (CACs), which provide "a safe and supportive environment for children who have been sexually abused or have witnessed a violent act". CACs have trained nurses and other staff who know how to deal with children to provide "counseling, support and follow-up throughout the process".

Greenberg also introduces Rolando, one of 70 "infant simulators" owned by the CAN office and used in their "Safe Baby" program. Passing Rolando around the gathered Rotarians, Greengerg explained that these are computer controlled simulators that teach what caring for a real baby would be like. They do everything you would expect with the exception of having real bodily fluids, although diapers do need changing.

The simulators are quite expensive. Many schools have them, but most have just two or three due to the cost. With 70 babies representing all ethnic types, CAN will visit two classrooms at a time and send babies home with 25 to 30 students from two classes. Up to 60 simulators will be out every weekend "which is important because we have 60 miserable children from the same school each weekend."

"This is one of the most realistic" experience a teen can have without having a real baby. The simulators record everything that happens to them and that is reported back to CAN when the baby is returned. "We see everything, but we're really trying to address shaken baby syndrome" said Greenberg. She also described the current thinking about how to put a baby to bed safely.

Although she could not specifically address the issue of preventing teen pregnancy, she did note that there is a noticeable delay after having the simulator. "The kids are so excited when we go in on Wednesday to talk about babies. When they get their babies, baby clothes, and diapers on Friday they're even more excited. When we go back on Monday morning to pick them up the teens are almost throwing those babies at us".
