GUNS IN SCHOOL? Poll Shows Michigan Public Solidly Opposed, Green Bashed

Michigan voters don't want guns in school, concealed or open, a recent EPIC-MRA poll shows.

Meanwhile, the perpetual sponsor of guns in school legislation, State Sen. Mike Green, was soundly bashed by the statewide newsletter Inside Michigan Politics (IMP), founded by Bill Ballenger, a fellow Republican former legislator. (Publisher now is Susan J. Demas, longtime Capitol reporter)

We have followed Green's career and continue to be baffled why an otherwise reasonable legislator, albeit of an ultra-conservative bent, would dash any potential hopes for higher office on the dangerous shoals of concealed carry/open carry.

His advisors have dropped the ball, in our opinion; they should have warned him away from pursuing the gun issue to the jaws of the political abyss.

Actually, the way the issue has evolved, Green has perhaps been saved from himself. Had the bill been approved, and some wingnut killed a bunch of kids in a Michigan school, Green's role as facilitator would have been his sad legacy.

To his credit, Sen. Green has been attentive to Bay County issues and has been diligent in that regard even though local voters went against him -- no doubt over the gun issue -- in the last election.

His other counties, Tuscola, Lapeer and Huron, put him over the top in the race against Democratic neophyte Bay City teacher Ron Mindykowski, who seems to have seen enough of the political process to last him. Too bad, he showed flashes of a magnetic personality and a facility for meeting voters positively on their own grounds.

As Marlon Brando so timelessly proclaimed "I coulda been a contenda."

The report by EPIC-MRA states: "Taken together these and other survey results show that voters solidly oppose the underlying premise of a legislative proposal that presupposes public acceptance of firearms in schools by allowing people to conceal carry in exchange for banning people from openly carrying guns into schools.

"A 61 to 33 percent majority said they agree (45 percent strongly) with the statement that 'the only guns that should be allowed in schools, colleges, universities, daycare centers and early childhood centers are the guns that are carried by law enforcement and school security officials, and the Legislature should only pass laws that prohibit people from bringing any weapons into schools, regardless of how they are carried.'"

IMP laid it on heavy, touting Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson as a "Winner" and Green as a "Loser." Patterson was lauded for nearly achieving success on a bill to switch the county executive election to the gubernatorial, instead of the Presidential election years. This supposedly will give more clout to the GOP since Dems are noted for large turnout for the Prez.

IMP's rant: "It's been almost three years since the Republican senator (Green) had his concealed carry expansion bill vetoed in the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy, where 20 school children and six adults were gunned down. Green has reintroduced legislation allowing concealed carry in "gun free zones," including schools, daycares, and sports stadiums, which passed a Senate committee last month. With gun control efforts failing at the federal level, many proponents of Green's bill believed the time was right to try again. But Gov. Rick Snyder has dashed their hopes, announcing he'd veto the bill again unless there's a local opt-out provision." (Such a provision would virtually nullify the bill since most, if not all, schools would certainly opt out.)

The national trend seems to be running against expansion of gun rights as reasonable politicians realize there's always a crazy person ready to shoot everything he sees just on general principles. The U.S. should now be ready to stop the insanity, at least we hope.
