It's not just coffee with cream, anymore

COFFEE! I Had No Idea How Complicated it Would Get

I think I drank my first cup of coffee when I was 17.

That would have been sometime close to 1960.

I'm pretty sure that was a just a few years before Juan Valdez came onto the scene and convinced us all the "Columbian" coffee was better than all the rest.

I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

400 Million Cups per Day

I drank coffee in college to stay awake all night "cramming" for exams that I didn't study for earlier in the week because I was either playing bridge in the "Huddle" or shooting pool in the Student Center.

According to the Huffington Post (Thank You, Google) . . . "Americans consume 400 million cups of coffee per day, equivalent to 146 billion cups of coffee per year, making the United States the leading consumer of coffee in the world."

I readily admit that I cannot function before 9:00am unless I've had coffee. Even microwaved coffee from yesterday is better than no coffee. Once, I went out to my car and brought in yesterday's car cup . . . microwaved it and threw in a teaspoon of sugar just to make it drinkable.

If 146 billion cups are consumed each year in the USA, I'm sure there are similar (if not more disgusting) coffee stories that could be uncovered.

Coffee has become a way of life.

I have many fond memories related to coffee.

I recall (back in the 60's) that the first McDonald's coffee was the worst swill that ever poured into a coffee cup. (Sixty years later -- Not so bad). I also remember that afternoon 7-11 coffee was equally bad until 7-11 learned to throw the old stuff away and make new coffee every 3-4 hours.

When GM and Grey Iron Foundry in Saginaw were "booming" back in the 1970's, morning coffee was the #1 money-maker for the Broadway 7-11 -- the last stop before a Saginaw trip via the old River Road.

10 years ago I bought coffee at a Barnes & Noble Bookstore. It Was Terrible .... Because I (foolishly) ordered coffee with cream. I didn't realize that I was supposed to kill the taste with mocha, caramel or other additives.

I've made a few visits to Seattle over the past few years to visit my daughter. In Seattle, Starbucks REALLY has it "going on."

There's a Starbucks App for that -- Starbucks has an App that notifies me when there's Starbucks within 50 feet of where I'm standing. Not only can I pay for my coffee with my App, but when my App balance gets low, Starbucks automatically sucks money from my bank account just so I'm "cash ready" for my next coffee purchase. (And ... they send me an email to let me know the money has been transferred.

I'm still not totally hip. I drink iced caramel coffee with "room" for cream. I Googled to make sure I knew how to order correctly.

If you don't "talk the talk," depending on the Barista, there could be an "INCIDENT."

I hesitate to use the word pretentious but yesterday I stood in line for an iced caramel coffee and the person in front of me ordered:

"Venti, half whole milk, one quarter 1%, one quarter non-fat, extra hot, split quad shots (1 1/2 shots decaf, 2 1/2 shots regular), no foam latte, with whip, 2 packets of Splenda, 1 sugar in the raw, a touch of vanilla syrup and 3 short sprinkles of cinnamon."

Say What!! ...

Was my face ever RED? ... When I ordered my "medium, iced, caramel coffee with room" in a very quiet voice without making eye contact with the Barista.

I paid my money with my App and scuttled away.

I've still got a so much more to learn about coffee.
