From the big cities of Anchorage and Juno to live in ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge), filmmaker Dale Johnson covered the 49th state from top to bottom for the film "Lure of Alaska."

The film, part of the Bay City Noon Optimists Club Travel and Adventure Series, will be screened at 7 p.m. March 14 at the State Theatre, 913 Washington Ave. Tickets are $8 at the door.

"It's a good overview of the entire state," said Johnson, who called Alaska home for five years. "We are in the cities and natural areas. One of the surprising things about the state is not everyone lives a reclusive life there. If you live in Anchorage, you're lifestyle is going to be lived pretty much like Bay City, Detroit. You get up, go to work, come home, watch TV, grocery shop."

Then there are people like Phil Koontz, who gave up life as an engineer and lawyer to live his dream In Galena on the Yukon River, in a log home he built himself.

"He brought his family there," said Johnson. "You will see something about his lifestyle."

What's his favorite part of the movie?

"The sequence with the grizzly bears was most entertaining," he said.

Johnson, who now produces award-winning commercials and documentaries through his company, Trailwood Films, has worked in public relations at Johnson Space Center and worked on films for NASA during the Skylab years.

He has won two Golden Eagles, an award given for exceptional media content from CINE.

Johnson now lives in Lubbock, Texas.
