With the hope of spring on the horizon, Studio23/The Arts Center opens an exhibit that offers the audience not only the hope of spring but the sorrow that comes before from artists Linda Allen and Lori Zurvalec.

Sorrow and Hope opens Thursday with a 5-7 p.m. reception. The exhibit will be on display from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday through April 8, at the center 901 N. Water St.

The work of the two women, says Garrett Weslock, curator, combines abstract expressionistic mark making with traditional watercolor techniques.

The combing of sorrow with the hope is shown in Allen's flowers and collages.

"Linda has created these amazing watercolor paintings of flowers that are recognizable as flowers but also can be seen as a full abstraction," Weslock said. "She has also created a series of collages that are terrifying and alluring at the same time."

Allen will also be displaying her Linda's Spirit series, a representation of women and how the spirit is ever-changing.

Zurvalec's work runs from colorful vegetation to the spiritual.

"Lori creates an ambiguous space filled with vegetation in bright colors," said Weslock. "Her spiritual component is her Songs of Praise series, inspired by the psalms of praise from the Old Testament."

Weslock says the audience will be moved by the work.

"Emotion is something both artists incorporate into their work," he said. "Linda and Lori's work will inspire a change in viewers whether it's from the bright colors, emotional line work, deep conceptual ideas or the pureness of the patterns they use."
