More than 50 volunteers helped out Bay County Habitat for Humanity Women's Build May 5-7

The list was long - fill nail holes, wash blinds, light fixtures and cupboards, power wash house, tape all outlets and light switches, clean up the yard and add a new side porch. But the 12 men and women - including last year's Volunteer of the Year Howard Kraenzlein - who showed up at 9 a.m. Friday for Habitat's National Women Build Week, hosted by Bay County Habitat for Humanity and Lowe's were bound and determined to get each item on the list crossed off before 4 p.m. quitting time.

"I'm keeping my fingers crossed," said Jason Skirlo, construction director for Habitat. It must have worked. By noon half of the items on the list were crossed off and volunteers eagerly went on to the next after lunch provided by Hungry Howie's. Everyone was having a good time.

"Everyone is getting along like peanut butter and jelly," said Nicole Kinde, community outreach coordinator. "They are motivated, and will hopefully teach someone something new and learn something themselves."

When the Women's Build wraps up Saturday, more than 50 volunteers will have pitched in at 518 Marsac St. The home, a new build for Habitat in 2007, didn't work out for the first family, putting volunteers to work fixing it up for a new family who will hopefully take up residence in late summer.

Cairra Berry dug into the cupboards with a bucket of sudsy water and scrubbed away. Berry is putting in what Habitat calls "sweat equity," the 250 hours those receiving a home must put in as part of their agreement with Habitat.

Berry will be helping out a whole lot more when her home at the corner of Jane and Mountain streets gets off the ground in a couple weeks. "It feels to good to be true," she said of her soon to be new home. "I saw the foundation the other day and it brought tears to my eyes. I knew it was happening then."

Meanwhile, helping others achieve the same goal is something she says just makes her feel good. "It makes me proud," she said. "It's a good company that helps people change their lives. When I leave here today, I will know I have made a difference."

Although called a women's build, men weren't shy about joining in. DeWayne Edsall has been volunteering for Habitat for five years. "It's just the fun of doing it," he said. "It's a good feeling when you get it done, providing affordable housing for someone. I have a sense of accomplishment." Others are welcome to get that feeling as well by stopping by Saturday to help complete the projects.
