The Battery Park rededication is scheduled for Tuesday, June 21 at 5:00 p.m. in front of the Alice and Jack Wirt Library in downtown Bay City.
The 45-minute program will feature Medal of Honor recipient Colonel Roger Donlon, as keynote speaker. Partners of the project will also speak to the significance of the Park.
Organizer and program emcee, Dr. Tim Eckstein, medical director of Occupational Medicine at Covenant Healthcare, and 40 year Navy veteran stated "the rededication will recognize donors and supporters of the rejuvenation project. The program will include the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War color guard, and a trumpet quartet will perform a variety of musical works".
Highlights of the program are two replica cannon cast by employees at Bay Cast, a local foundry. A 13-inch Sea-Coast Mortar cannon and a 9-inch Dahlgren piece were cast to the dimensions from specification books used by foundries in the 1850's. Battery Park's two original mortars were obtained from Fort Sumter where the Civil War started. The Two original naval cannon were in service on the USS Hartford at the capture of New Orleans and later at the Battle of Mobile Bay. All four pieces were transferred to the War Production Board in 1942 to be used for WWII scrap.
A traffic control shack used by early railroad companies to warn of trains arriving and departing from the depot has been recreated as an informational kiosk.
"This rejuvenation project also includes new sidewalks, plantings, and benches, " said Eckstein, "but the real benefit is for the future generations who now have an opportunity to learn and better understand the historical significance of our city".
The public is invited to the rededication. A dinner following the ceremony will be held at American Legion Post 18, adjacent to the library starting at 6:30 p.m. Reservations are required for the meal and there is a charge of $15. Keynote speakers at the dinner are Colonel Donlon, and Charles Tuesch, founder of Children's Libraries International. Tuesch, a Vietnam veteran was an infantryman with the Americal Division.
Since founding CLI there have been 35 children's libraries built in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
