Bay City native Patrick Yandall comes home for Christmas

If the predicted blizzard hits Saturday night, smooth jazz guitarist Patrick Yandall is ready to heat up the night with some holiday music and perhaps a few Grammy-winning tunes.

Yandall will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at the State Theatre, 913 Washington Ave.

"I'm going to be doing some stuff from my holiday releases and my latest release," he said. "It's called Ethos and it's up for a Grammy for the best contemporary instrumental. We will have some holiday surprises in this concert."

Ethos is a Greek word meaning a kind of train of thought that can change people's morals and behaviors through the use of music. Ethos is up for Best Contemporary Instrumental album at the Grammys. One tune, in particular, has been living up to the name.

"A radio station in England called to tell me one of the tracks, -- My Sanctuary, -- is very sexy," he said. "A lot of women have been calling the station to say it's a very sexy song and they like it."

Yup, Yandall will be performing that tune during the concert.

That title didn't exactly start out as an album to heat up the night. It actually came about when a company who makes a guitar pedal called Ethos Overdrive decided to use one of Yandall's songs to promote the product.

"I composed a song the company uses to demonstrate the product," he said. "I thought it (Ethos) was a neat name and ended up naming the album after that."

Besides the new album, Yandall, a Bay City native who now makes his home in San Diego, Calif., has been pretty busy.

Two more of his song have been used in the opening season of the Fox TV show, -- New Girl, -- and the Weather Channel is using more of his music.

And says Yandall, things are about to get a whole lot busier.

"My son got a lacrosse scholarship to Amherst," he said. "When he was home I tried to limit my traveling to be home for him. I didn't want to be one of those musicians who is never home. I told my wife I wanted to try and get back to some more jazz festivals and performances."

Although his schedule is filling up, Yandall will be back next year. He is already signed on to do the Bijou Orchestra Christmas. In fact, he and Catherine McMichael, one of the leaders of the group, will hook up while Yandall is town to discuss the details of the concert.

In the meantime, he's looking forward to spending time with family, friends, and fans.

"I'm looking forward to seeing everybody," he said. Hopefully, everyone will come out for a night of warm jazz. I'm looking forward to playing the new album. It's really fun to play it out. It's been getting some great reviews."

Tickets are $22 for adults and $12 for those 18 and under, and available at the box office, 913 Washington Ave., by calling 989-892-2660 or logging on to http://www.statetheatrebaycity.com.
