Zak Branigan
Zak Branigan, Executive Director of the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy spoke to Rotary about SBLC's local projects. He opened by talking about Rotary's "Running Dead Zombie Run" held this past October. Then he gave an overview of his organization along with information about some of its programs.

Saying that he really didn't know that much about running races and certainly not about Zombie Runs, Zak said that they have a runner working for them. She took the lead to work with Rotary and helped with the success of the race. His assistant Trevor Edmonds showed slides during the talk.

Zak spent more time talking about the Discovery Preserve, originally known as the Euclid Liner Park. SBLC partnered with the City and the County to take that park, which had declined over the years and make it into a vibrant and exciting nature preserve right in the heart of Bay City's West Side.

The Discovery Preserve property is still owned by the city and, technically, remains a city part. SBLC works under a long term lease to manage and improve the area. Upcoming plans include a picnic and several volunteer opportunities to continue the improvements to the park.

Working with partner organizations like the Chippewa Nature Center, the Preserve features play areas, conservation projects like bird houses and a chimney swift structure. Interpretive items help educate the public to nature in the middle of town.

The SBLC is celebrating its 20th anniversary. In that time they have brought some $15 million in investments in conservation in the area. They have 6,000 acres of land protected in some 81 locations in the region. All of their areas are open to the public.

At the end of his talk, Zombie run chairperson Chris Girard presented a $5,000 check to Zak for the work of the SBLC.
