Soojung Kim

Traditional Gown
Wearing a traditional gown from her country of South Korea, exchange student Soojung Kim spoke to Rotary Tuesday. She showed slides of her home, school and family and she talked about the country.

Using the map shown, Soojung's home is in Ansan, which is about 18 miles south of Seoul. With a population of 750,000, Ansan known for its many manufacturing plants and is the home of the largest tidal electric power station in the world.

Soojung showed some of the Korean dishes the area is known for and gave a short description of each. She also noted that the Korean language, Hangul, is praised by many linguists as the best language in the world.

She showed slides of some of the celebrities and entertainers from the country as well as scenes of the cities, her own house, and her family.

A student at Kwangdeok high school at home, Soojung has become a very active student at Western High, where she is a Pom-Pom and is in the Tennis Club and the Art Club. Students in her home wear uniforms, which she illustrated.

At the conclusion of her talk she took questions then presented Rotary trading flags from District 3750 to the Bay City Club and to host Cathy Schell.

Callen McDonough will be our exchange student to Italy next fall. That will be after she graduates from Central High, which is a common practice among exchange students.

Things are just coming together for Callen's trip to Italy. She just heard from her host family for the first time the day before this presentation.

Being very interested in film making, Callen loves to make YouTube videos and she has a series called called "TEENAGE" in in which she interviews local teens and posts their stories on-line. The series is well worth viewing. Just search for her name on YouTube. Callen plans to continue this series in Italy.

Callen is the youngest of six children in a very close family. A native of Bay City, she has lived in the same house her entire life. Her presentation covered her friends and school then described the country, state and finally her home town.

Callen's presentation is a work in progress and she asked for feedback from the Bay City club on items she might change or expand on. Her goal is to translate the final program into Italian for presentation to the clubs overseas. When she returns she will again visit local clubs to talk about her experiences.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tim Holsworth reported on the upcoming club Golf Scramble. The proceeds will benefit Bay County schools. A small percentage will go to the club foundation, which funds things like the Community Grants. In the past funds went to Bay City Central High. This year's funds will be distributed to all area school districts. You may designate your choice of school district on the registration form. Funds will be allocated based on participant requests.

Golf Raffle tickets are on sale. Members are encouraged to sell 10 tickets ($5 each or $20 for 5 tickets). You may also buy the tickets yourself as a donation to the club. These tickets and the sponsors are the primary source for fund raising on this project.

Thanks to all of the sponsors. Special thanks to Wildfire Credit Union, which provides the prizes including the traditional large smart-TV!

Andrea Hales is still looking for a host family for our next incoming Exchange Student. Please see Andrea if you're interested. Everyone who has been a host says it's an experience not to be missed.

The next "club social" is to be a PICNIC on June 10 at the Discovery Preserve on Euclid. There will be food and activities for the entire family. Put it on your calendar NOW.

New member Pete Shannon brings his experience from other Rotary clubs to our club as he takes on the upcoming Membership Drive. If you can help, talk to Pete about joining his committee. The Committee and interested Rotarians will meet May 23 at 11:00 before the regular meeting.

On a down note, Bob Chadwick reported that the Paul Harris statue in Rotary Park was vandalized. Two teens beat it with skate boards. The damage was relatively minor and will be repaired.

On a more satisfying note, the Police do know who did the damage to Paul Harris, as well as other acts in the downtown area. In keeping with our modern, well connected ways, these two "brainiacs" videoed their actions and posted them on-line. The Police said that within an hour of interviewing the kids, the videos were taken down. But that didn't matter because the Police have copies of it all.
