BRMC's CEO Robert N. Wright

Robert N. Wright, President and CEO of Bay Regional Medical Center (BRMC) since November 1998,is moving on to a Lansing hospital.

Mr. Wright is credited a key role in the turnaround in the financial condition of BRMC after months of red ink adecade ago.

The executive will leave the Bay County hospital to assume the position of President and CEO of Ingham Regional Medical Center (IRMC), a unit affiliated with BRMC, in Lansing effective May 15.

Mr. Wright will replace Dennis Litos, who has accepted a senior leadership position with a health care system in California.

Wright, who joined BRMC in February 1996 as Chief Financial Officer of Bay Health Systems, led the organization through the economic challenges of the late 1990s to clinical and economic excellence.

Bay Regional Medical Center is a not-for-profit acute care 415 bed hospital serving more than 500,000 residents in east and mid Michigan.

BRMC offers General medical andsurgical care, general intensive care, cardiac intensive care, cardiology, open-heart surgery, neurological care, pediatric medical and surgical care, physical rehabilitation, obstetrics, orthopedic care, emergency care.

Selected accreditations/memberships of BRMC include: Accredited, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO); Accredited, Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

During Mr. Wright's tenure, the hospital was recognized for excellence by Solucient as a Top 100 Hospital and by J.D. Power and Associates as Distinguished Hospital for an Outstanding Patient Experience. HealthGrades®, a leader in health care quality and resource management, awarded BRMC with several clinical and safety awards.

The hospital is the County's largest employer, with more than 2,000 employees.

"Bay Regional Medical Center has prospered both clinically and financially under Bob's leadership," said William R. Bowen, Chairman of the hospital's volunteer Board of Directors. "We are sorry to be losing such a valuable leader, but we know that we are in very capable hands with Alice Gerard," stressed Bowen. Ms. Gerard, registered nurse and current Vice President of Patient Care Operations, will serve as interim CEO during a national search for Wright's replacement.

"Bob has provided the leadership and management skills that have propelled Bay Regional's exemplary success in both the clinical excellence and financial arenas," said Philip A. Incarnati, President and CEO of McLaren Health Care in Flint, the parent corporation of BRMC and IRMC. "He has a proven track record of building strong relationships with employees, physicians, and the community. I have every confidence that Bob will utilize this expertise to advance the outstanding programs and services of Ingham Regional Medical Center in support of its mission of service to the Lansing community."

"It has been an honor to work with such an outstanding group of physicians, employees, and volunteers," said Mr. Wright, who was approved by Ingham's Board of Directors in a special meeting May 4. "We have worked through some difficult challenges together, and we could not have achieved such considerablegrowth and award winning clinical excellence without the intelligence, hard work, and confidence of this truly outstanding group of people. I am sure that this team will continue to provide the same support for Alice as they deal with the challenges ahead. I have very mixed feelings about my move to Ingham," Wright continued. "Many of the physicians and staff here have become close friends. But I look forward to this new challenge, knowing that I leave Bay Regional in extremely capable hands."

Interim President and CEO, Alice Gerard, MSN, became a staff nurse at Bay Medical Center in 1978. She earned her Associates Degree in Nursing from Delta College, and her Bachelor's and Master of Science Degrees in Nursing from Saginaw Valley State University. She is a Fellow of The Health Care Advisory Board, a national healthcare executive training program co-sponsored by The Advisory Board and Harvard Business School. Gerard has been Vice President of Patient Care Services since 1999, where she is responsible for all patient care departments and programs, including patient care quality, operational effectiveness, and financial management. "Bob's leadership has been superior," said Gerard. "We have built a strong team under his guidance, with physicians, employees, and volunteers all working toward the common goals of clinical excellence and outstanding customer satisfaction. I have no doubt that he will bring the same level of service and leadership to our colleagues at Ingham. I am also confident that the team we have in place at Bay Regional will continue to build on the clinical and operational excellence we have worked so hard together to establish," Gerard continued. "I look forward to our future here with optimism and enthusiasm."
