Sarah Archer
Sarah Archer, from Iris Waste Diversion Specialists, Inc., is a Resource Recovery Contractor to the City of Bay City. In that role she is consulting on the City's recycling program and talking to groups throughout the city regarding the new program.

Archer's talk covered the history and current practices for collecting and recycling waste products both locally as well as state, country, and worldwide. In today's world, "99% of everything bought is no longer in use after 6 months." That's a lot of waste. Part of the answer harks back to the slogan "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle". That that phrase we now add "Repeat".

Bay City will soon be rolling out a new program with the slogan "Take Pride At Curbside!". The hope is that residents will be pro-active and improve what they recycle. The City provides each residency with an 18-gallon green recycling bin. That first bin is free but additional bins may be purchased for a one-time charge of $6.50.

Archer talked about what can go in the bin and the way the city wants that waste. First, pop and other bottles can be recycled (or returned to stores) with the caps ON. Modern machinery removes them in processing. Second, they want papers and magazines LOOSE. Bundling or tying those papers items requires manual intervention to remove ties.

A major concern is "tanglers"! That is plastic bags, ropes, strings, clothing... anything that can get tangled in the machinery. Each day the huge processing machines must be stopped so a worker can climb in and remove that stuff by hand.

On the topic of hand processing, the fact is that all trash and recyclable items end up on conveyor belts where human workers sort and pre-process the trash. Not a nice job, but a required one that is done.

In the past recycling was a source of income. Today, overseas users like China are rejecting a large amount of US waste. It's no longer profitable or "clean" enough. The domestic use of those materials is growing. Archer showed examples of products made by recycling a number of common waste items.

The new City program will go into effect soon. Archer is available to talk to any group. You can also check out the city web site for a great deal of information. In fact, if you have questions about what to recycle, and how, that site has answers. As new questions come in, their answers will be added.
