Noted Commentator Paul W. Smith of WJR Radio, Detroit, entertains an early morning crowd at the DoubleTree Hotel-Bay City Riverfront.

Fountain at Waterfall Park at the foot of Third Street is flowing, attracting throngs of visitors on Sunday.

Downtown Bay City was hopping Sunday as the new fountain in Waterfall Park was spurting skyward, attracting throngs of visitors.

"They're testing it out for the first full weekend," said Greg Kimbrue, co-owner of the Kingfish Restaurant and Tiki Bar, located next door to the new downtown plaza.

It seems the "cool city" idea is bearing fruit almost immediately with folks really taking to the new attraction.

"This is really something; we had no idea there was anything like this in downtown Bay City," said a woman from Gaylord, down for Mother's Day.

"This is great!" enthused a man from Grand Rapids. "How many cities have anything this cool?"

Kids, especially, were loving it, running in and out of St. Laurent Bros. candy emporium with goodies and traipsing out onto the plaza near the fountain.

Sun would occasionally peek through the clouds, spicing the day with shafts of good feeling. It was a great Mother's Day and moms were everywhere with their children.

Downtown promoters hope this early indication of popularity spreads and that more people from out of town arrive to fulfill the city's promise of tourism.

WJR Radio may return to the DoubleTree Hotel during the Tall Ships Festival July 20-23, according to downtown sources, who said: "Paul W. Smith loves it here and really wants to come back."

Smith and his WJR crew were here to spur tourist interest a few weeks ago at the beginning of the tourism season and talked to a MyBayCity.com reporter.

"This is a fabulous place to go within a tank of gas or less," said the noted commentator, adding: "John and Judy Lore are big supporters and we're big supporters of what they do."

Fundraiser extraordinary John Lore and his wife Judy, residents of Jennison Place, were instrumental in arranging for the radio team's visit here.

"There is enthusiasm in Bay City and we can feel it," said Smith. "A lot of great things are happening here in the Bay City area."

Insiders said the DoubleTree "saw a big spike" in business following the WJR broadcast here. Candace Bales, executive director of Downtown Bay City, Inc., said she was at a conference in Novi the next day and had many people line up for information about Bay City.

A list of events slated for coming months in downtown follows:
