The Bay Concert Band opens the Bay Arts Council's "Wednesdays in the Park" summer series Wednesday, June 7 in Wenonah Park with what is described as "a wonderful mix of classical and modern music."
Thirteen other groups will follow on successive Wednesdays in Wenonah Park, with the Sinclair's and Paisley Fogg slated for June 14.
Formed three years ago as a "just for fun" diversion from real life, The Paisley Fogg's first performance at a charity fundraiser was so well received it led to numerous job offers. "I guess we're a real band" comments founding brother Keith Birchler.
Sporting a triple guitar lineup, a rock-solid rhythm section, five outstanding vocalists and a passion for 60's rock music, The Paisley Fogg puts ona show from the heart.
Built on a large base of British invasion and American tracks of that golden, late 60's era, their tasteful menu of tunes also includes many lesser-known yet instantly recognizable songs, notes lead guitarist Tom Birchler.
"If you like guitars, you're gonna love our show," adds rhythm guitarist and avid collector Dave Birchler.
"We all carry multiple guitars and basses because we are so focused on getting an authentic sound. We have to tune something like 54 strings before playing a show," observes bassist Ron Graham.Drummer Tommy Anderson gushes, "This band is a dream come true for me. The Beatles are my all time favorite band and these guys know a ton of their songs."
Other performances on the schedule include:
June 21: Evening of Harmony, barbershop and A' Capella harmony with the Harbor Sounds Chorus, Sweet Adelines Tri-City Chorus and Championship Guest Quartets "Dreamcatchers" and "Party of 4."
June 28: New Odyssey: three musicians, 30 instruments, audience involvement, sheer zaniness.
July 5: Trilogy, everything from the 50s to the present if you like Motown, Bob Seger and in between.
July 12: Backbeat . . . A Tribute: one of the best Beatles Tribute bands, from the early days of the British invasion through Sgt. Pepper.
July 19: Saline Fiddlers: stage show including music, song and dance from traditional American folk fiddle, bluegrass, jazz, western swing andCeltic music.
SPECIAL: REO Speedwagon highlights the Tall Ship Celebration with a performance July 22 in Vets Park.
July 26: Ambassadors: 17 piece orchestra featuring Big Band music at its best, like Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller.(Funded in part by the Michigan Council for the Arts and Michigan Humanities Council.)
Aug. 2: Spyder Turner: "An Apollo Theatre Living Legend," best of the Motown tradition.
Aug. 9: Rumours: The Fleetwood Mac experience that does not and cannot quit.
Aug. 16: Face 2 Face: Combination tribute to piano man Billy Joel and Mr. Fantastic Elton John.
Aug. 23: Parrots of the Caribbean: A night in Margaritaville with the Parrothead Band and best of the Jimmy Buffett sound.
Aug. 30: Judy Harrison and High Impact: "Country music with an attitude!"
