Rev. Phil Johnson
Rev. Phil Johnson spoke to Rotary Tuesday about the Forgotten Man Ministry at the Bay County Jail, where Rev. Johnson is the Chaplain.

The phrase Forgotten Man dates back to the late 1880's when it was the title of a lecture given by William Graham Sumner in Brooklyn. It was later picked up by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1932.

Today the Forgotten Man Ministries is a Grand Rapids organization that has affiliates throughout the state that minister to inmates in jails and other facilities. Working with Jail Chaplains, the ministry provides counseling and other services. They work in coordination with the sheriffs in each county.

Johnson talked abut the influence of drug addiction and abuse on lives. Forgotten man provides counseling, church services (from all faiths), Bible distribution, and library carts. A few years ago they did group sessions two days a week. Today they provide sessions seven days a week and are looking to soon add more sessions.

Forgotten Man does not impose itself, or its beliefs on the inmate. They try to make their services known, but the inmate must request the first contact. Although a Christian organization, Forgotten Man helps people from all belief systems. If someone is non-Christian, counselors like Rev. Johnson will find someone of the same faith to talk to the inmate.

Johnson said that the need is great. The Bay County jail can house from 240 to 270 people and most of the time it is near capacity. The population varies seasonally with the winters having the largest numbers. Women make up a smaller percent with about 40 women typically housed.

Bay County sees about 5,000 bookings a year. Of those, 4,500 may return to the community. "We have a choice" said Johnson. "We can leave them to sit in jail and learn to be better criminals or we can provide services and minister to their needs." Forgotten Man chooses to minister to the needs of these inmates.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

This Tuesday was Harvey Schneider's final meeting as Club President. Next week the gavel will be passed to Tara Welch as the incoming president. THANKS HARVEY! You've done a great job in your year.

The Annual Club Golf Outing was held yesterday at Maple Leaf. A number of people spoke to the success of the event, the fun, and gave various anecdotes.

The Tall Ship Celebration is coming to down in mid-July. We sent out an e-mail last week asking for volunteers to sign up for this Community Service opportunity.
Rotarians,

One of the best "jobs" at Tall Ships Celebration is volunteering at the VIP tents .... this is Club Service, fun like our Club Greeter duties and you just never know who you'll greet!

I need to coordinate shifts over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 19-21 - there are tents on the East and West sides, 2 or 3 persons per shift are needed -- 1) 9:45AM - 1:15PM, and 2) 1PM - 5:00PM.

VIP Volunteers are not limited to Rotarians, but by tradition Rotary is offered the first opportunity to build more Rotary good will! You're welcome to work with a friend or family member. I have not contacted the other Bay Area clubs, but they will be given the opportunity if we cannot fill the shifts. Some of our members have already committed so....

  • Please let me know if you have a first, second, and third choice of days/times to work, if you wish to work more than one shift, and if you prefer East or West VIP Tent or if you're totally flexible
  • Let me know if another person is working with you.
  • You will be given a T-shirt so I need your size/s as well.

Thank you for your consideration and many thanks if you have already offered to serve!

  • FAREWELL!

This issue is the last Breezes in this format, which has been used for the last 15 years. It also marks the end of the club web site, administrative software and archives as they have been known.

At the board's direction, the club will be moving all records, web site, and the Breezes to the Club Runner system, which is an internet-based system administered locally by District 6310.

You may continue to use the same URL to reach the club. A box has appeared at the top of the current web site home page for a few weeks and that box has links to both the Club Runner site and the Club's Facebook pages. On Monday that box is all that will appear. Just take the link that you want to use.

Note that dues invoices for the coming term were distributed via Club Runner e-mails last week. Don't forget them. Kevin Ayala, the club treasurer, is now fully in charge of invoice distribution and dues collection.

Note that the dues invoices show the Doubletree as the mailing address. Sending dues there caused a bit of confusion. Please use the club's old PO box or hand deliver your dues to Kevin at a meeting.
