Announcements

  • August 8: Regular Board Meeting at 11:00 before club meeting.
  • Sign up to work as the greeter, 50/50 sales or meal cashier. Sign up sheets are available each meeting at the table.
  • Rotary Credit Card: Another credit card offer is being made. This one will return to the club $25 of the first $75 charged.
  • August 15: Committee meetings before regular meeting:
    International Night committee
    Long Range Planning committee
  • International Night: Bucket of Fun and auction items needed. Rob Clark and Kathy Czerwinski sang a rousing chorus of "There's a hole in the bucket Dear Kathy, Dear Kathy". Two buckets will be raffled off this year: an "adult content" bucket and a "family fun" bucket. Members were offered three options to help. Bring in an item for the bucket, leave money in the envelope left on the tables, or mail in a check. Czerwinski gave out raffle tickets to many members and encourages everyone to sell them. 3,000 tickets were printed and they sell for $2 each or three for $5.

Group Study Exchange from India team scheduled to arrive August 20. There will be 3 women and 2 men. Mike Stoner said that in previous years the team has been put up in a Bed and Breakfast for their first few nights. This year the club is seeking members who will house these guest for four nights. (Stoner noted that all five of the guests are vegetarians.) This is the team that was scheduled to come earlier in the year but had last minute visa problems.

Library Millage Vote Tuesday Aug 8
Keep The Lights and Heat ON!
Member Linda Heemstra, interim directory of the Bay County Library System, encouraged members to get out and vote for the millage renewal Tuesday (August 8th). Heemstra reminded everyone that this is a millage renewal, not a new millage. It is not related to the construction and renovation project. 61 % of the Library's operating revenue comes from the millage. "Without this millage it's hard to imagine how the system will run."

The Bay County Library system is one of the top rated and most used systems in the state. 900,000 items were checked out in a 12 month period. The state average library usage is 6.1 items per capita. In bay count the average is 9.4 items.

Several years ago the Rotary Club's major project was to fund a youth outreach librarian for 5 years. When that was accomplished and the library took over the positions funding, the highly successful program and position was dropped. Now through careful management the position has been restored.

Some comments have been heard concerning the size of the new Wirt Library. Heemstra noted that the nation wide trend in library construction is to go large. "The whole purpose in building the new central library was to alleviate the impossible over crowding at the existing library. We had to plan for 20 years from now, not just for today."

  • LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM: William "Bill" Parlberg, District Governor for 2006-2007, addressed the club outlining goals for the upcoming year. Parlberg is a member of the Frankenmuth club and CEO of Zehnder's in Frankenmuth.

According to Parlberg, the Governor jobs are:
  • Motivate and inspire
  • Lead and supervise
  • Educate and Inform
  • Make an annual visit to each club.

Parlberg emphasized the fund raising for the Rotary Foundation. The district has set a goal of $147,000 for this year. The presidents of all the clubs have collectively set a goal of $120,000. That leaves a gap of $27,000 which Parlberg addressed with several proposals and ideas.

  • Members must be educated to the fact that after three years with the foundation, half of the local money contributed is returned to the district where it can be distributed as "simplified grants".

  • Only half of the district's 1,500 members currently contribute. The other half need to be convinced to make some contribution no matter how small. If each of those people gave just $10, that would be $7,500.

  • As a gift to the club, Parlberg arranged with his boss at Zhenders to contribute a weekend family pass to Splash Village in Frankenmuth. The club can raffle the ticket or do anything else with it to raise funds. The only string is that the funds go to foundation. The pass is valued at $350.

Parlberg also introduced the RI's new Paul Harris Society for members who agree to donate $1,000 annually. The program is administered by the District, not by RI. Society members will be honored with a special pin and other recognition. Six members have already signed up from the District.

When Parlberg talked about individual club giving goals, Kathy Czerwinski of our foundation committee announced that last year our goal was $10,000. In fact, the total for the year was $15,100. Parlberg said that if all clubs had that motivation the district's $147,000 goal would be no problem at all.

The District Governor's job is certainly time consuming, but Parlberg said that you don't have to be retired to do it. He works full time and has a wife and kids at home. The Governor has plenty of help with eight assistant governors and 40 supporting committees. Nobody should think they can't do the job.

Parlberg meets with Board of Directors prior to regular meeting.
