Bay City to Host State History Conference This Weekend for 1st Time

Ron and Corinne Bloomfield will be among local officials to welcome visitors to the Bay County Historical Museum on Friday for the President's Reception of the State History Conference.
 
Historic State Theatre will be the site of an educational session at the State History Conference on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. hosted by Dale Wolicki.

About 200 of Michigan's most dedicated history enthusiasts will descend on Bay City on Friday for the three-day 132nd State History Conference.

"This is the first time in our knowledge that this event has been held in Bay City," said Gay McInerney, executive director, Bay County Historical Society.

Registration deadline is Tuesday and may be made on line at www.hsmichigan.org or by telephoning 800/692-1828. The conference is sponsored by the State Historical Society of Michigan in cooperation with the local society, F.P. Horak, DaimlerChrysler and the Rural Arts and Culture Program.

The conference begins Friday at 2 p.m. with a trip on the Saginaw River aboard the Islander of Bay City Boat Lines and a trolley tour to local historical sites.

A president's reception will be held Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the Bay County Historical Museum, 321 Washington Ave., at which time state history awards for publications will be made.

Musical humorist Bob Bloenk will provide entertainment at the State History Awards Banquet Friday at 6 p.m. at the DoubleTree. The conference program includes:

  • Opening keynote, Saturday, 9 a.m., at the DoubleTree Hotel -Bay City Riverfront, speaker Eric Jylha, WNEM-TV, "Marketing History in Your Hometown."

  • Saturday concurrent sessions, 10-11:30 a.m., Lumber Days and Camp Life, Al & David Eicher, Program Source International, Rochelle Balkham, Eastern Michigan University; Maritime History & Underwater Archaeology on Saginaw Bay, Jay Brandow, author, and Ric Mixter, diver; and "Developing Good Curriculum Guides for Your Museum, Henry Amick, Amick Museum Resource Development.

    Saturday noon luncheon keynote at 11:45 a.m. in the DoubleTree will feature as speaker D. Laurence Rogers, local historian and author, speaking on "James G. Birney: Abolition, Civil War & Running for President."

    Concurrent sessions slated Saturday 1:30-3 p.m. are: "Diaries and Postcards: Telling the Story," with Patricia Drury and Leon Katzinger; "Digital & On-Line Resources for Michigan History," Sharon Carlson, WMU Regional Archives, Steve Rossio, Portage District Library, Elizabeth Clemens, Wayne State University, and Frank Boles, Clarke Historical Library, Mt. Pleasant; and "Grass Roots Preservation: Successful Local Efforts to Preserve Historic Structures," with John T. Meyer, Wigen, Tincknell, Meyer & Associates.

    Concurrent sessions 3:15-4:45 p.m. Saturday are: "Save the Site: Historic Preservation Meets Active Reuse, Ron Bloomfield, Bay County Historical Museum curator, and Jim Bedell, Bay City planner; (this session will tour the historic Industrial Brownhoist site); "Pre-Cut Kit Homes in Michigan," Dale Wolicki, author and historian (location State Theatre); "Practical Approaches to Beginning a Local History Project," Daniel Stewart & Amanda Holmes, Overlook Partners, Inc.

    The Celebration Banquet will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Scottish Rite Cathedral, 614 Center Ave., with the Rostollans as featured entertainers performing Civil War music.

    Sunday, 9-12 a.m., Terry Wagar, director of the River of Time, will share information about the event at the DoubleTree and lead the group across Veterans Bridge to witness the event first-hand.###
