I've got College FOOTBALL FEVER!

Well, it's more like I HAD the fever. And, after Saturday's MSU-Notre Dame game, well . . . let's just say I need a few weeks away from the game.

I've just been way too involved in college football this year. I'm to the point where I'm actually making bets on college football games with bartenders . . . and losing. I think Andy (One of the Men in Black) over at Old City Hall is thinking about a new car since he started collecting Michigan money from me last week.

Like many , I got caught up in this Notre Dame - Charlie Weiss hoopla and it's altered my personality. You see, I'm mostly a "quiet" kind of Notre Dame grad. Most don't really know that I graduated from Notre Dame during the Ara Parseghian era (1965)and that I was there when John Huarte (Of Huarte to Jack Snow fame) won the Heisman Trophy in 1964. I usually keep my Notre Dame allegiance pretty close to the vest.

But this year, it seemed like a good time to "come out of the Fighting Irish closet" and wave the Fighting Irish flag. After all, it was the second year of Weiss and Quinn.

Well you filled up my head,
With so many lies.
Twisted my heart
Til something snapped inside.
I'd like to give it one more try
but my give a damn's busted.

Sure . . . Georgia Tech was a sloppy win (14-10) by any standard of measurement. But it was the 1st game of the season. Georgia Tech was expected to be a stiff test . . . blah, blah, blah. I gave points and lost.

Then, Michigan thrashed Notre Dame (at South Bend) a lot worse (47-21) then even the score indicated. ND's Offense was bad. ND's Defense was worse. I gave points again . . . Blah, blah, blah. Midway thru the third quarter of the Notre Dame - Michigan State game, I was so traumatized that I was chugging Maalox and chewing TUMS and ROLAIDS like they were M&Ms. MSU led 31-14. The Spartans were kicking our Irish buttocks all over Spartan Stadium.

All I could think of was . . . ND is going to lose back-to-back games against Michigan and Michigan State. It's not going to be safe for me to be on the street in this football town until after Christmas. And . . . You guessed it. I had given points for the third week in a row.

But even after the Miracle comeback (40-37), I was still upset and got to thinking . . . "Charlie, I can't live like this, I just can't go on like this." And I fell asleep, sad and alone, with these words on my lips . . .
I really wanna care,
I wanna feel somethin'
Let me dig a little deeper...
Nope...
Sorry...
Nothin'

But today is a new day. And now I know that Notre Dame football coach, Charlie Weiss is one smart cookie.

I figured it out in the middle of the night - Listening to Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell.

A lot of teams would just win 12 straight games and then play for the National Championship at the end. So it just follows that Charlie must have a better plan. Otherwise, why would he lose to Michigan?

Notre Dame's Charlie Weiss must have a plan.

And then, it hit me. I see the big picture now. I think that Charlie's plan for a 2007 BCS College Football National Title included a loss to Michigan.

Now . . . I'm not saying that Notre Dame lost on purpose. But Michigan is the only team on its schedule that Michigan could afford to lose to and still win a National Title. Maybe he just let the Wolverines win cuz he knew it would motivate the Fighting Irish to win and win and win . . .

Look closely at the last game of the year for both ND and Michigan.

    Do You See It Yet?

Right now, Ohio State is Number 1 in every poll. USC is Number 2 in "almost" every other poll. Michigan is generally Number 6 and Notre Dame is lurking somewhere in the upper "teens" . . . 12th in the AP and 14th just about everywhere else.

Are You With Me on this, yet?

Last Game of the Year (11/18) for Michigan = Ohio State.
Last game of the Year (11/25) for Notre Dame = USC

It's all so obvious (Gee, Mr. Obvious) now that I'm almost a little embarrassed. ND will "run the table" and be 10-1 when they come up against USC and my favorite QB, Joe Don Booty.

Michigan will also run the table and be 11-0 when they take on the Buckeye nation on 11/18.

After ND and Michigan knock off the Buckeyes and the Trojans, Michigan will be #1 and the IRISH will vault to #2 . . . the BCS football world will be chanting in unison . . . REMATCH! REMATCH!

That Charlie Weiss . . . He's one clever football coach. No wonder they're going to put him up on the ND Library mural.
