LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM: Attorney James Randall Johnson; Eric Jylha programmer.

Jim Johnson is more than just an attorney in Auburn, Michigan, and a professor of Political Science and History at Saginaw Valley State University.

He is a former Navy officer who engages in adventures that would make most folks quake with fright.

In the course of his adventures he does freelance journalism for WNEM-TV, Channel 5 and the Saginaw News.

A few years ago he spoke at the Bay City Rotary Club on a mountain-climbing expedition that had the membership gasping for air.

Johnson's latest excursion was to Lebanon and Syria to view for himself the action in the 34-day war pitting Israel and Hezbollah.

He entertained and informed Bay City Rotarians last week with visual and audio reports from the war zone, complete with pictures of an attractive bikini-clad multi-lingual Swiss miss he met on the beach in Israel who became his driver and interpreter for a time.

"We can learn through the refractive lenses of others or first hand," said the intrepid Mr. Johnson. "I am so lucky to be able to carve out a life to be able to do this."

When the war broke out, Mr. Johnson flew to Tel Aviv, Israel, and was in the war zone a day after leaving the placid Saginaw Valley area.

He described Hezbollah as "an Iranian-backed group formed when Israel invaded southern Lebanon."

The battle pitted powerful Israel with 168,000 troops and 408,000 reservists armed with U.S. F-16 fighters, smart bombs, laser-guided weapons and other advanced weapons.

Iran armed Hezbollah with Katyshua rockets that were fired almost non-stop into Israel after the conflict intensified.

He and his driver were "ushered out" of Syria on a dangerous trip he described as "amazing," commenting: "The untold story is the environmental damage through fires."

President Bush's comment that "Israel won the war" was over-reaching, he said. "Anybody who was there knew that was not true."

"Hezbollah fought Israel to a standstill," said Mr. Johnson, adding: "Hezbollah was not required under the cease fire to disarm or give back the kidnapped Israeli soldiers. The blowback on the United States will last for decades. Unfortunately we have used up our credibility in that part of the world (the Middle East)." Mr. Johnson doesn't he forsee any solution to the problems in the Mideast region, predicting: "If we don't take out the Iranian nukes the Israelis surely will."
