PROGRAM THIS WEEK:

Dr. Jerry Decker will speak to Bay City Rotarians this Tuesday on an issue important to us all --alternative energy.

Dr. Decker is expected to focus primarily on wind energy, windmills, that are the subject of controversy in Michigan's Thumb region right now.

LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM:
Rob Clark's Excellent Auction of Items From His Desk, And Other People's Desks.

"They're on to me," exclaimed Rob Clark after he completed another amazing auction of items from his desk, bolstered by items from desks from untold office sites.

While Rob conned Rotarians out of $385 last year, this year he was restricted to $184.25, still a significant amount but not up to Rob Clark standards.

There were highlights that should remain in the memory of Rotarians who no doubt will come storming back next year to fill the coffers at Rob's bidding:

  • Cindy Chadwick was outbid by her husband, Caro Rotarian Bob Chadwick;

  • Tim Holsworth bought a magnet but was clued in to the prize ahead of time;

  • Chuck Cusick showed himself a brave trouper by outbidding himself and helping the cause.

  • Rob's cheerleading, however, helped spark Rotarians to respond to another outstanding International Night on Thursday which apparently raised record amounts for Bay City and international Rotary programs.

    It was an unforgettable night, especially because of the poached salmon with maple sauce, lamb stew, the most colorful vegetables ever seen and desserts to kill for, or perhaps literally to die for. Rob and Jeff Yantz emceed the event. We will update you on the total raised as soon as figures are tabulated.

    NEW ROTARIANS: Inducted last week were KELLY ADRIAN FRICK, metro editor of The Bay City Times, former business reporter, graduate of Standish-Sterling High, 1987, and Michigan State University School of Journalism, 1991; SARAH DELEHANTY, health and safety director of the East Shoreline Chapter, American Red Cross, from West Branch, marketing graduate of Saginaw Valley State University; KEVIN AYALA, assistant director, Bay County Library System, 1986 graduate of Central High, 1990 from Delta College, 1994 from Saginaw Valley State University, former Means Stamping and Bay County finance department employee.

    NEWSBREAKS:

    Michael Dunkel, new director of the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra, was a guest last week;

    Proposed new members are Cathy Dwyer, Heartland Health Care, and Jennifer Carroll, United Way of Bay County;

    Dictionaries delivered to third graders in Bay County: 1,363; fund provided by the Bay City Rotary Club, #1,700; morning club, $600;

    Kudoes to Bay City Rotary President Gena Gates, new executive director of the East Shoreline Chapter, American Red Cross;

    Sheriff John and Connie Miller, new Paul Harris Fellows in honor of their son, John Miller, Jr., presented by their son-in-law Mark Murray, Rotarian from Adrian.###
