Author Frederick Stonehouse, honored by Great Lakes maritime historians.

The author of two new books dealing with crime and hauntings has won an award for historic interpretation from the Association for Great Lakes Maritime History,(AGLMH). Frederick Stonehouse, of Marquette, a leading maritime historian and a dedicated historic preservationist, received the Association's 2006 Award for Historic Interpretation.

Dr. Charles Feltner of DeTour Village was presented with the Association's 2006 Award for Historic Preservation.

AGLMH is a regional association of over 100 maritime museums and historical societies.

FREDERICK
STONEHOUSE
Stonehouse has written 28 books on Great Lakes maritime history including regional bestsellers "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and "Great Lakes Lighthouse Tales."

"While many have written about shipwrecks and lighthouses, Stonehouse has taken the lead in exploring many new aspects of the region's marine heritage," said AGMLH president Steve Harold of the Manistee County Historical Society.

"Stonehouse's book "Haunted Lakes" created an entirely new genre in Great Lakes publishing. Similarly, one of his most recent books, 'Great Lakes Crime - Murder, Mayhem, Booze and Broads' looks at an often forgotten side of the region's marine heritage."

He is also publisher of the recently re-released book, "Wreck Ashore," said to be a definitive history of the U.S. Life-Saving Service on the Great Lakes. The book won a national publishing award.

Stonehouse earned a Master of Arts degree in History from Northern Michigan University, Marquette

. Another book, "Haunted Lakes, Great Lakes Maritime Ghost Stories, Superstitions and Sea Serpents," has opened an entirely new genre in Great Lakes study. His book, "Final Voyage," is the first Great Lakes shipwreck book for children.

He has also been a consultant for both the U.S. National Park Service and Parks Canada and an "on-air" expert for National Geographic, History Channel and Fox Family, as well as many regional media productions. Awards for contributions to Great Lakes maritime history have been received from Underwater Canada, Our World Underwater, Marquette Maritime Museum and Marquette County Historical Society.

Fred has taught Great Lakes maritime history at Northern Michigan University and is a consultant for Great Lakes oriented projects and programs. In April 2000, he began teaching two Internet courses on Great Lakes lighthouses, the first such instruction on the web. A new internet course on Great Lakes Maritime History started in 2002 and now is on hiatus.

Among major presentations Fred has given include: the National Maritime Conference, Great Lakes Aquarium, Erie Maritime Museum, Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival, Michigan Lighthouse Conference, Gales of November, (Duluth), Ghost Ships Festival (Milwaukee), Keeper of the Light Festival (Bayfield) Underwater Canada and Our World Underwater among many others.

His articles have been published in Lake Superior Magazine, Wreck and Rescue Journal and Great Lakes Cruiser magazines as well as other publications. He is President of the Board of the Marquette Maritime Museum, President of the National Board of Directors of the U.S. Life-Saving Service Heritage Association and a former member of the Michigan Iron Industry Museum Advisory Board. Fred lives in Marquette with his wife Lois and son Brandon.

Fred is active in the Marquette Community, serving on boards and committees including: Northern Michigan University Alumni Board, The Marquette County Economic Club, chairman of the Marquette Harbor Advisory Committee and the Northern Michigan University De Vos Art Museum Advisory Board. Also, he chaired the Mayor's Ad Hoc Task Force to develop the Marquette Harbor Master Plan.
