Guy T. "Tim" Moulthrop of Bay City has been honored for leading fundraising for a free volunteer medical clinic for the non-insured or under-insured.

Thousands of Bay area citizens are getting free primary medical care from more than 300 volunteers through the Helen M. Nickless Volunteer Clinic.

As of the end of last year, the Helen M. Nickless Volunteer Clinic had hosted 3,444 total patient visits, about evenly divided between new and returning patients. About 45 persons are seen at each of the Wednesday evening clinic sessions.

The fundraising effort began several years ago and the clinic opened March 31, 2004. Located at the Family and Child Health Clinic, 1480 W. Center Road, Essexville, the clinic operates Wednesday evenings from 5 p.m. until the last patient is seen.

These patients include:

  • A severe diabetic who lost health benefits when his job was ended five years ago.

  • A self-employed woman with a six year old daughter, both of whom have multiple chronic medical problems.

  • A man with a thyroid deficiency who had not seen a physician in 20 years, the last time he had insurance. He is now well enough to exercise daily and return to the workforce.

For his efforts on behalf of the clinic, the Mid-Michigan Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professional (AFP) has named Mr. Moulthrop of Bay City as the 2006 Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer."

Nominated by William Bowen, chairman of the board of Bay Regional Medical Center, Mr. Moulthrop is co-chair of the committee that raised more than $4 million in less than 20 months for the clinic. Co-chair is Michael Stodolak, vice president of Independent Bank, Bay City.

Mr. Bowen said: "Contributing personal funds, organizing programs to raise funds for some worthy cause, inspiring others to give of themselves have been a part of this man's life for nearly 60 years. He is truly someone deserving the honor. Tim's passion and dedication are responsible for this outstanding outcome."

Mr. Moulthrop is chairman of the board of MCI, Moulthrop-Clift Insurance, Inc., local full service insurance firm at 701 N. Madison Ave., a company that traces its history here to 1867.

Mr. Moulthrop was involved in fundraising in the 1960s that helped found the forerunner institution to Saginaw Valley State University. He also worked in fundraising for the Bay Area Family Y, Bay Medical Center, Bay City Schools, the Great Lakes Center Foundation, United Way of Bay County and Trinity Episcopal Church.

The AFP award was presented at the local chapter's annual National Philanthropy Day recently at Apple Mountain Conference Center, Freeland. Mr. Moulthrop was introduced by Keith Markstrom, who was the AFP's Outstanding Fundraising Executive in 2005.

After merging four hospitals during the 1970s and 1980s, Bay Regional Medical Center has developed a full continuum of health services for Northeast Michigan. BRMC has received numerous awards, including 20045 top 100 Hospital from Solucient and 2004 Distinguished Hospital Award (top 2 percent) for Patient Safety from Health Grades.###
