Simon, Paula and Randy - Talent Beware!
Is it just me? Or has January television always been this bad?
During the most recent Fall T.V season, I developed an internal evening clock that seemed to get me in front of a television at the most appropriate of times during the workday week.
Sunday: Desperate Housewives.
Monday: Two and a Half Men.
Tuesday: Standoff, House and Boston Legal. (My favorite night)
Wednesday: Bones.
Thursday: Grey's Anatomy.
December was a busy month with shopping responsibilities. Television became a just blur of Christmas Specials and college football bowl games. I, for one, stopped watching television based on any premeditated schedule.
The weather was good. We were busy with the holidays. Who needed television?
At one point in early January, I actually thought we just might not have a traditional Michigan Winter this year. The 40+ temperatures of December and early January had me thinking "global warming."
Now, three weeks into the new year, and the late January forecast is for cold, cold and colder. Snow seems to be falling almost every day. I'm hunkered down like an igloo Eskimo in an artic blizzard.
Dinner dishes are cleaned away. Papers and mail are processed for the day. Darkness comes early. It's Winter.
Anything good on T.V. tonight?
I hate to admit it. But I'm watching "Idol." After six years of never watching, this year I'm a new recruit.
I was there on Tuesday - prepared to watch Standoff, House and Boston Legal. Instead, I got to choose between a two-hour premier of "Twenty-Four" (which I've never much cared for) and the first two-hour kick-off of American Idol.
I chose Idol.
I got two hours of Randy, Simon and Paula in Seattle on Tuesday. It was like watching a train wreck. It was bad. Nonetheless, I was back in front of the TV for Wednesday night and the parade of mostly pathetic non-talent from Minneapolis.
Karaoke without the musical accompaniment. I know one thing sure . . . I did not sing in the shower or in my car while listening to WHNN oldies for the rest of the week.
I wasn't about to take a chance that Simon might be listening.
And yes, I'll be back in front of the TV this week, watching the parade of wannabes and waiting for the barrage of cheap-shot comments from Randy and Simon. I'll be wondering (like you) if Paula is under the weather or under the influence. I'll be wondering (like you) why no one has ever told these 25 year-old "singers" that they
really can't sing.
And I'll watch for another week (after all, it's Memphis) or until
Standoff and
House are back on the air.
It's only a few weeks 'til Ground Hog Day. Maybe this year, Phil will not see his shadow and Spring will come early and we can all get out of the house and away from the darn T.V.
