    Synergy.

That's where it's at, says Harry Leaver, who heads the Center for Business & Economic Development (CBED) at Saginaw Valley State University.

CBED creates partnerships with companies that "create and develop high-expectation new business (ventures that create jobs)," said Mr. Leaver.

"This synergy is the key differentiator between SVSU and most other universities," Mr. Leaver told Bay City Rotarians last week, adding:

  • "CBED is the connection between SVSU and the business and economic development organizations of the region.

  • CBED works hand-in-hand with SVSU's College of Business & Management and the College of Science, Engineering & Technology."

    Mr. Leaver explains:

"CBED is an umbrella organization made up of seven main components offering a variety of innovative services."

    These components are:

    1. Independent Testing Laboratory.

    2. Saginaw Valley Research & Development Corporation.

    3. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

    4. Entrepreneurship & Commercialization Center.

    5. Center for Rapid Prototyping & Innovation.

    6. Center for Manufacturing Improvement.

    7. Office of Continuing Education & Professional Development.

Each of the component organizations aims to accelerate economic diversification around existing "hot spots" in advanced manufacturing, medical device manufacturing, alternative energy and advanced computing and informatics.

A resident entrepreneur has come on board to help inspire and guide this growth, Mr. Leaver concluded.
