Bijou Orchestra presents Valley Stories
at The Doubletree Hotel February 14, 2007

Those who are looking for a romantic Valentine evening are invited to "Valley Stories", presented by The Bijou Orchestra, Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Bay City.

The event is sponsored by SC Johnson Company.

The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with the opportunity to dance to The Bijou Orchestra. The orchestra will play dance selections from a variety of periods. Dancing is followed by a sumptuous sit down dinner.

Complementary beverages including beer and wine will be available during this time, and a cash bar for mixed drinks will be available throughout the evening.

Leo Najar, artistic director of The Bijou says, "After dinner, we come to a really special part of the evening," Najar, continued, "Since our event takes place on Valentine's day, we thought it would be fun to honor three well-known couples from the Saginaw Valley area by writing an original musical based on anecdotes they have shared with us."

Don and Betty Carlyon live in Bay County. Their story is being written by Mary Lou Benecke, director of state government relations for Dow Corning with music by Maestro Najar.

Wally and Irene Bronner will be the subject of a piece by Stasi Schaeffer, a well-known member of the Saginaw theatre community with music by Catherine McMichael, composer and pianist for the Bijou.

Midland's Bob and Ruby Iwamasa will have their story written by Leo Najar with music by James Hohmeyer, Artistic Director of the Midland Musical Society. Actors and directors will be drawn from throughout the tri-county theatrical community.

In addition to dinner, dancing, a brief Bijou concert and the musicals, there will also be an opportunity to bid on a number of silent auction items as well as a raffle of items appropriate for Valentine's day. (Sorry-no signed football jerseys!)

Tickets are $60 per person. Patron seating is available for $175, which includes two tickets, a mention in the program book and credit for a tax deduction of $55.

Tickets must be ordered in advance of the event and may be purchased by calling (989) 892-4200 or by visiting the Bijou box office at 917 Washington Avenue, Bay City. The box office is open from 1-5 PM Tuesday through Friday. Phone inquiries will be returned at the patron's convenience.

The Bijou Orchestra is named for the Bijou Theater, one of the earliest Bay City theaters, which later became known as the Bay and eventually the State.

Thirteen outstanding musicians come from Michigan and beyond to perform in this challenging medium in which every player is a soloist. The Bijou regularly performs around Michigan and its recordings are heard on NPR and the CBC.

The orchestra is supported in part by grants from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Kantzler Foundation, the Russell H. & Maxine E. Smith Foundation, and the Bay Area Community Foundation.

Major corporate contributors include the SC Johnson Corporation, Labadie Auto Company, Dow Chemical, Dow Corning, Bay Regional Medical Center, OmniSource and Thelen Auto Group.
