LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM:
Alice Gerard, President of Bay Regional Medical Center spoke on the new South Tower expansion to Bay Med's main hospital. Gerard joined Bay Med as a registered nurse in 1978. She assumed increasing responsibilities over the years and was promoted to Vice President of Patient Care Services in 1999. She was appointed President and CEO in October 2006.
The South Tower is a 142,000 square foot building being constructed on the south side of the existing hospital. In addition, about 61,000 square feet of the present building will be renovated, mainly on the second floor, which will be used for surgery and heart center expansion.
The south tower will house a 43,000 square foot emergency department with 35 beds and a 3 bay enclosed ambulance garage. An outpatient entrance will provide access to new areas as well as the main hospital.
Space vacated by the present emergency department will be renovated for radiology, medical records, and the doctors' entrance and lounge.
The second floor of the new tower will include 47,000 sq feet for outpatient surgery and procedures. There will be 4 operating rooms, 4 endoscopy rooms, 16 pre-op prep rooms, 8 recovery rooms, and a 28 bed pre/post cardiac cath area. Space is also planned for some nuclear medicine use. The remaining area will be used by the OB unit.
The third floor will house an 18,000 sq foot OB/Gyn unit with 12 birthing apartments, 10 post partum/gyn beds, and a C-section room. The fourth floor will remain shell space for the time being.
The building construction cost is about $44 million. With fixtures, a new loading dock and central stores, and the capitalized interest and bond issue cost, the total project will come in at $52.4 million. The project will be funded with $44 million in bonds and $8.5 million from the hospital's cash reserves.
The projects introduces the potential for as many as 50 new positions ranging from registered nurses to mechanical and electrical workers.
When asked about the shortage of nurses, Gerard noted that the problem is more one of inadequate teachers than of students coming into the field. The Governor has proposed funding aimed at adding 3,000 instructors to the teaching work force. Even so, there is a shortage of around 8,000 nurses and the average age of existing nurses is 45.
Gerard was also asked about the potential of sharing very expensive medical equipment between hospitals. She replied that this is, in fact, being done. To purchase new equipment a hospital must demonstrate the demand and obtain a state "certificate of need".
Gerard also talked about the recently opened West Side Medical Mall on Euclid Ave. That project was estimated at $7.4 million and actually came in at $7.1 million. The facility became operational in November of 2006. It includes a pharmacy, a pain management center, physical therapy, a lab, and diagnostic services. The hospital leases space to REDIMED which provides occupational and urgent care services.
