The signs of Spring are visible all over. Saturday saw some 15 members of the Bay City Rowing Club working at the boathouse on the Middle Grounds to get ready for the rowing season.

The Bay City club was founded in 1989 and built the Victorian style boat house shortly thereafter. Since that time rowing has become a fixture on the Saginaw River. But this is not the first time. In the late 1800's rowing was very popular with active clubs in both Saginaw and Bay City.

A couple of years ago The Saginaw Rowing Club formed as a sister to the Bay City club. Reciprocal agreements allow members of one club to become an affiliate of the other club and row from that facility.

The Bay City club has sponsored the Central High School Crew for over a dozen years. This season the program was opened to all students in Bay County and a new coach was hired specifically for the high school program. (for more information send e-mail to BCRC High School Coach.)

Membership in the Rowing clubs is open to all. Both clubs hold regular "Learn to Row Day" programs which provide those interested with a chance to see what it's all about and even to get on the water.

The clubs own a wide variety of boats ranging from novice class to high performance racing shells. Both individual rowing and team activities are available. For those with a competitive nature, the clubs sponsor trips to a number of regattas each year.

Brenda McCauley mops the office.

High school crew members Nick Skrocki, Marandy Badour, and Kayleen Schepper clean the workshop area.
