The Bijou Orchestra will be joined by six outstanding young musical theatre talents when it presents its Mother's Day concert called Broadway Bound!

The celebration of Broadway favorites takes place on Sunday, May 13 at 2:00 p.m. in the State Theatre, 913 Washington Avenue, Bay City.

"We are thrilled to present these talented young people with The Bijou," said Bijou Artistic Director Leo Najar.

"Each of them has a great voice and the ability to really sell a song." Najar continued, "They were selected by our committee of judges because of their talent, plus their training and experience. Most of them have appeared in many shows, often as leads."

Najar added, "Talent like this is a sign of the region's high interest in musical theatre and a tribute to the educational experience provided by schools and by community theatre groups."

The two youngest winners are Kelsey Woods an 8th grader from Christa McAuliffe Middle School and Madeline Lynch, a 7th grader from Western Middle School.

The four senior division winners are Casey Jo Brege , a senior at Bullock Creek High, Hillary Huebler, a sophomore from the Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy, Joe Colucci from Heritage High and Chelsea Wietfeldt, who also attends SASA. They will sing both solo and ensemble numbers in the show.

The winners will receive coaching and training by Kathy Wagner, the singer and director from Grand Rapids that has directed past Bijou musicals including; I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, The Big Bang and Beehive. They will also work intensively with Leo Najar prior to their rehearsal and performance with The Bijou.

"Broadway Bound!" will include selections from throughout the history of the American musical tradition along with favorites that were first introduced in other countries.

"There is a great tradition of presenting musicals at the high school level in this region," said Najar. "We look forward to having some great young talent share the stage with a first class professional theatre orchestra. It's an experience that will be great for them and for the audience."

The Broadway Bound performance is made possible by a gift from the Robert and Helen Lee. Their training and workshops are made possible by a gift from Jerome and Dianne Yantz.

Tickets for "Broadway Bound!" are $23 for reserved seats and $18 for unreserved. Student tickets are just $10.

Tickets may be purchased by phone (989) 892-4200, on-line at www.BijouOrchestra.org at the Bay Musical Arts Box Office located at 917 Washington Avenue, Bay City.

The Box Office is open 1-5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. It will also be open on Saturday, May 5 and May 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. If there are any tickets remaining, they will be available at the door beginning one hour before the performance on May 13.

The Bijou Orchestra takes its name from the Bijou Theater, one of the earliest Bay City theaters, which later became known as the Bay and eventually the State. The ensemble is composed of thirteen outstanding musicians drawn from Michigan and beyond to perform in this challenging medium in which every player is a soloist.

The orchestra is supported in part by grants from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, the Kantzler Foundation, the Russell H. & Maxine E. Smith Foundation, and the Bay Area Community Foundation. Major corporate contributors include the SC Johnson Corporation, Labadie Auto Company, Dow Chemical, Dow Corning, Bay Regional Medical Center, OmniSource and Thelen Auto Group.
