CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS


  • International Night committee will meet Tuesday May 29 at 11:00 just before the regular club meeting. MANDANTORY ATTENDANCE by COMMITTEE.

  • Bring a friend to Rotary. For prospective new members we have a supply of the "Rotary Basics" brochures that explain the organization very well.

  • The Golf Outing on June 4 is almost fully booked. As of last week there were openings for only two more teams. Visit www.RotaryBayCity.org for full information and an e-mail link to the Golf committee chair. This is the club's SECOND LARGEST fund raiser after International Night.

  • Rob Monroe is still looking for a family to house Mariana, our 18 year old inbound exchange student from Mexico. Housing is needed from Christmas to Easter. Mariana will be attending Bay City Central High.

  • Dues Increase: In response to a dues increase by Rotary International, the board approved a club dues increase of $1 (one dollar) for each six month cycle over the next three years.

  • The Pinconning Club meets every Thursday at noon - Third Street Deli.

    CLUB NEWS

    • Jerome Yantz presented a Paul Harris Society Pin to Dee Dee Wacksman. Thanks Dee Dee for supporting the foundation!

    • Linda Bosik, our Ambassadorial Scholar from last year, sent greetings via Barb Fisher. Linda will be studying in Paris next year. She is looking for a family to stay with and asks that if anyone has friends there she'd appreciate an introduction.

    • The Community Grants Committee reported the following grants, totaling $10,000, were approved for this cycle. Several grants were recommended for matching District Simplified Grant and two such grants were awarded.
      1. Bay Sail Environmental Science Study Program $1,000
      2. Literacy Council K-3 Summer Tutoring Program $,1500
      3. Pinconning Area School District and Rotary Club of Pinconning $1,050
        PLUS District Grant
      4. Bay Arenac ISD Imagination Library $1,000
      5. Camp Fish Tails Art Supplies for camp program $1,000
      6. Bay Arts Council HHM Film Festival $2,000
      7. Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy (Four Preserves Signage) $1,000
      8. Studio 23 in collaboration with Bay Area Head Start Art Program $1,450
        PLUS District Grant


    • Chuck Brooks announced that he sold his house in Pennsylvania. Congratulations Chuck... you're going to have a wife again soon!

    • Club Treasurer Wanda Dwizura and Club Secretary Stephen Kent Visited the forming Pinconning Club and talked about their responsibilities in a club. Everyone anticipates that the Pinconning Club will be chartered soon.

    Last Weeks program - May 15, 2007: Jorome Yantz and Joy Baker discuss MLK Scholarship

    Rotarians Jerome Yantz and Joy Baker spoke to the club about the new Martin Luther King Scholarship program created by the Bay, Midland and Saginaw Community Foundations in partnership with the local chapters of the NAACP.

    Only 26% of Michigan citizens have college degrees, said Yantz. It's important that we work to insure that all worthy students have the opportunity to go to college. Once they graduate, we must find work for them in Michigan.

    The scholarships will be funded by separate endowments managed by the three area Community Foundations. The spendable proceeds of these endowments will be combined annually to award scholarships through the tri-county area.

    Two of this years scholarship recipients were presented to the club. Sergio Campbell will attend Central Michigan University in the fall and plans to follow a pre-med course of study. Derek Smity will attend Grand Valley where he wants to major in psychology. Both young men are from Bay City Central High.

    The MLK scholarships will be presented each year at a celebration which will move among the three communities.
