Beach at Bay City State Recreation Area has been improved this year to a near pristine state by volunteers.

Volunteers at Bay City State Recreation Area continue to groom and improve the 1,200 foot long beach while a solution is sought to shoreline muck plaguing turnout of swimmers, according to County Commissioner Kim Coonan.

"We continue to work on putting a volleyball tournament together in mid September," he said.

"We are working with Dave Miller who is involved with the local volleyball association as well as with state wide volleyball teams. "He was very impressed with the beach and we hope to bring in many teams throughout the state."

Mr. Coonan said a number of nets will be required for the tournament.

He added: "We hope to have some sponsors for some of the volleyball nets.

"We want to keep some of the nets at the beach and if we have additional nets locate them at various locations throughout the county so residents have the opportunity to play."

The county has for several years maintained beach volleyball courts at Veterans Park that are popular during warm weather months.

Commissioner Ernie Krygier, the Board of Commissioners legislative-financial analyst Robert Redmond, unions, state and City of Bay City employees all are involved in the effort to restore the beach.

Over the past several years the beach has been groomed and cleaned so it now is a favorite

site for photographers as well as picnickers and outdoor enthusiasts.

The volunteer group has raised funds through an annual "Beach Wellness" Run and sponsorships to fund expenses associated with the beach and shoreline cleaning project. Floating docks have been purchased and installed to enable swimmers to reach the water without having to deal with muck that periodically fouls the shoreline.

By virtue of this project, the county has acquired beach grooming equipment that will be used for cleaning the beach at Pinconning County Park and other areas in the county.###
