Wayne Maier is celebrating his 60th birthday by planning expanded programs for children through his firm's charitable foundation.

Wayne Maier has a vision for improvement of the lives of underprivileged young people in the community.

The CEO of Maier & Associates Financial Group, Inc., has spun off an impressive list of projects to aid kids in the three years since he founded Wayne Maier & Associates Charitible Foundation.

"We are doing this to help underprivileged kids who are falling through the cracks," he said, adding: "We hope to promote citizenship among younger children and hopefully this will create an impact when they get older."

The foundation projects include:

  • Bike drops to elementary schools; (a boy and girl in each class who are "doing something right" are chosen at random to receive a new bike);

  • Coats for Kids, formerly handled by Created for Caring;

  • Twenty college scholarships for average kids who have a good record of community activities;

  • Dinner and free shoes for kids of families in the Bay County Women's Center;

    "We want to help kids who have tough lives; adults have choices, kids don't," says Mr. Maier, who turned 60 last week.

    A self-made success in the financial services field, Mr. Maier joined the Marines on graduation from Flint Northern High in 1964. He served 7 1/2 years, including two tours in Viet Nam.

    Beginning as a life insurance salesman in Flint, Mr. Maier organized his own company in 1984 and moved to Bay City in 1990.

    The firm has four branches:

  • Maier & Associates Financial Group, Inc;

  • Maier & Associates Accounting Services, Inc.;

  • Maier & Associates College Planning, Inc.;

  • Maier & Associates Small Business Resource Center, L.L.C.;

    Maier & Associates Financial Services, Accounting Services, College Planning and Small Business Resource Center has 19 employees and operates in Bay City and also in Gaylord, an office established in 2004.

    The foundation, headed by Eric Jylha, director of public relations for Maier & Associates, recently provided $26,000 to complete handicapped accommodations at a playground for Bangor Lincoln that will open in August. One stipulation: the park had to be named "Just For Kids," the name given to the youth division of the Maier Foundation.

    The foundation is working with Bangor School administrator Tom Matuszewski to update all playgrounds in the school district.

    The foundation has a youth board made up of high school students from the tri-county area, an initiative to help young people become aware of the needs of other youngsters, says Mr. Maier.

    Recently the foundation assisted a family to take their child who is suffering from Angel's Disease to a treatment center at Baylor University in Texas.

    "We try to provide matching funds so the community will get behind the projects we are supporting," said Mr. Maier.

    The foundation is offering a 2007 Chevrolet Corvette as a prize in a drawing to be done in October at the group's annual dinner. "Our goal is to give away all the money taken in," he said.###
